No Obama fan

After listening to the president recently, I’ve come to the conclusion he isn’t so smart or he thinks we aren’t

Writer: BBQ festival will be missed

The good news is, that Pigs in the Park will survive because some other event will be glad to have these teams come to town and work with their organization. Maybe they can hold it in the park. It will not be in use next May.

‘Peasant’ control

Could it be that the peasant population, who understands the implications of the legislation, gets flustered at these Town Hall meetings when these elected rulers suggest that we not trust our lying eyes and minds and do trust the truthful and reliable lips of politicians?

The problems of civilian terror trials

Many questions have been raised expressing concern over the Obama administration’s expressed desire to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed in criminal court. How long will it take? How much will it cost? Will it be a platform for propaganda? Will New York City be a target for terrorists because of the trial?

Wonderful care

I have just returned home after being a patient at DRMC for four days. During that time, I received excellent care

Spirit of Independence Day growing

The spirit of July 4, 1776, is clearly building and more people are carrying copies of the Constitution in their shirt pockets than ever before

Rep. Perriello’s part of the problem

I was so pleased to read Rep. Tom Perriello’s op/ed column in the Register & Bee on Feb. 13.

I have tried in several letters to explain just how out of touch with people of the Fifth District Perriello is, but I must confess I didn’t do nearly as good a job as he did in his own words

Insurance regulation

Contrary to what Rep. Tom Periello said in his Feb. 13 op/ed column, the 1945 McCarran-Ferguson Act does not prevent the federal government from regulating the insurance industry. It provides that the states have broad authority to regulate the insurance industry unless the federal government enacts legislation specifically intended to regulate insurance to displace state law

Just wondering, but where’s the cash?

I am not an economist. Nevertheless, I do manage to balance my own accounts. My question to Congress, the Treasury and, most particularly, the Federal Reserve is where are the hundreds of billions of bailout dollars going that supposedly have been paid back by the multitude of recipient financial institutions?

Squirrely stance

I find it hugely disappointing, as I’m sure so many of my fellow Pittsylvania County and Danville voters do, that our representatives on the Board of Supervisors, City Council and Danville Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority are so squirrelly on taking a stance against uranium mining in the proposed Berry Hill megapark.

Bill would help students at all schools

I want to thank Del. Danny Marshall, R-Chatham, for supporting House Bill 599 that allows individuals or corporations to receive state tax credits for donating to scholarship foundations that in turn award scholarships to students for private school tuition costs.

Utility bill shock

A recent utility bill had us staring in disbelief — more than $1,250 between the upper and lower floor of our home for the 35 days in the December/January billing period.

Socialism or robbery

Socialists believe that the government, using the police power of the state, can take money from those who earn it and give it to those who can’t or won’t work. That’s not charity, it’s robbery.

DRMC’s terrific

Recently while resting at home, my wife began experiencing significant shortness of breath. Alarmed at this new symptom, we went to the emergency room at Danville Regional Medical Center.

‘Sickened’ too strong a reaction

This letter is in regard to the gentleman who wrote that he was sickened by the Register & Bee’s Feb. 7 editorial that he believed was biased in favor of Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Fifth District.

Perriello’s been a boon to district

I didn’t agree with all of Rep. Perriello’s votes (the Stupak amendment comes to mind just as one example), but overall, he’s done an excellent job for our district and voted his convictions, not to be “popular.”

Locally owned businesses need support

As a local business owner, it makes me upset when I see the customers of Danville and the surrounding area flock to a new business that is not locally owned and operated by a local person who lives in and grew up in Danville

Kill health reform now

Well, Scott Brown is installed as the new U.S. senator from Massachusetts. The Democrat leadership is now scrambling to figure out a way to pass something the voters have told them clearly they should scrap

Writer: Residents must get involved

I see where my representative on the Board of Supervisors, Fred Ingram, says we should just allow these uranium mining people to come in and we magically have jobs all over the place

Party analysis

Tea Party?

Perriello editorial disappointed reader

I was sickened reading the Register & Bee’s Feb. 7 editorial about Rep. Tom Perriello, “Perriello’s rough first year in D.C.”

Tea Party politics

I was thinking how comical it was when the Tea Party folks had their convention the other day. Each member had to pay $500 to attend and hear Sarah Palin, who was paid $100,000

Political star power

Laurence Verga, a Republican running for his party’s congressional nomination in the Fifth District, invited “Joe the Plumber” to Danville to endorse him

February 10, 2010

Are pro-mining folks getting antsy?

I smell a rat. Whose agenda is Ingram really trying to advance?

Region needs mining

As we await the outcome of multiple studies, it is important to think not just of the negative but of the fact this industry could mean good jobs for Southside Virginia

Obama promised us the moon

Health insurance reform is not dead, and the Democrats are working behind the scenes to bring it about by hook or crook. They want to force this unwanted issue on the American people even though the majority are against it

A vet’s best friend

Disabled veterans in the Danville and Martinsville community lost a dear friend Tuesday

It’s all about service

It is always a good idea to research companies before doing business with them. Naturally, you should watch for bogus accusations about companies, but I trust you can discern what is true. Just remember to get both sides of the story if you plan to deal with a business and stand up for yourself if you are wronged

Writer: Israel a beacon to the world

So many times Israel is called the Little Satan by her Arab neighbors, just like America is called the “Great Satan.” Though there is huge difference between the United States and Israel, our immediate neighbors are not calling for our total annihilation like the Arabs and the president of Iran are doing toward Israel

Great facility

I congratulate the people of Danville and Martinsville for their superb wound treatment centers that are located in both the Danville hospital as well as the Martinsville hospital. Dr. Henry Bridges, a knowledgeable and kind physician, heads the two centers. As by chance, I was a patient at the Martinsville facility and can attest to the highly skilled staff
