You choose
We don’t particularly like the idea of the quarter-cent sales tax for Rockingham County. And, as we’ve said here before, the issue isn’t likely to pass. When people vote May 6, they’ll be asked whether they are for or against an increase to the sales tax. If people haven’t studied the issue, and know the money will be targeted at schools, which box do you think they’ll check?
But it’s the best available option, considering the circumstances.

A conversation about race
The recent controversy surrounding a mural off Washington Street in Eden is added proof this country still struggles with the issue of race.
Now that we’re talking about it, we must be sure to promote an honest, civil conversation about the issue. Eden would be as good a place as any to begin.
Is Rockingham reading?
Rockingham Reads! is an initiative by the Rockingham County library to get people to read and to offer works that will lead to a healthy debate and discussion about a variety of important issues, race and cultural differences among them.
It’s a shame that so few people are participating this year.

Big trouble
Rockingham County is in big financial trouble. County Manager Tom Robinson faces balancing a budget that has come unglued as expenses increase and finances become strained. It cannot be fixed without some pretty drastic steps.

News of a company expanding in Rockingham County is good — but rare — news. The remaining textile manufacturers are teetering, and the tobacco industry — with a few exceptions, such as the General Tobacco plant in Mayodan — is all but gone in Rockingham County.

The fallout over Reidsville City Manager Kelly Almond’s raise still reverberates throughout the community. We’re still getting letters to the editor regarding the issue, and people have addressed the City Council recently to voice their displeasure.
