Perriello for Congress
This newspaper hasn’t endorsed a Democrat for Congress since Virgil Goode was a Democrat. Since Goode’s first campaign for Congress in 1996, we have backed him in every election, defended him from what we thought was unfair criticism by challengers and wished for him a long career in Washington.
But today, the Danville Register & Bee endorses Tom Perriello for the 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
We haven’t left Virgil Goode. Virgil Goode has left us.
Over the past several years, we have seen a disturbing trend coming from our congressman, who appears to be either unwilling or unable to work with the growing Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.
By Goode’s own admission, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a lock on power that won’t be broken. Goode says that if Congress had passed his bills on illegal immigration and energy, those problems would be well on their way to being solved.
The point is they didn’t pass, either because Goode is so far out of the American mainstream that his views are politically toxic — or because he doesn’t have the power and the pull to get anything done in Washington.
Several years ago, Goode did work on the tobacco quota buyout bill. But instead of that being the first of more legislation putting Goode’s stamp on the country, it appears to be an aberration. What we have seen from Goode are extreme views on Mexicans and Muslims, two groups of people held in low regard by many in the 5th District.
We strongly believe that unchecked illegal immigration must be stopped and radical Islamic terrorists must be defeated.
But Goode’s comments on the Mexican flag and one of his congressional colleagues, Keith Ellison, were at best stupid, and at worst, dangerous considering this region’s past treatment of minorities. Goode’s comments have nothing to do with the core issues of immigration and terrorism.
That leaves us with Perriello, a 34-year-old Charlottesville native. If he is elected, he would be the first congressman from the northern part of the district since L.F. Payne from Nelson County represented us in Congress.
Like Goode, Perriello has criticized his own political party on certain issues (energy, the financial crisis and federal spending). Like Goode, Perriello believes in constituent service. Like Goode, Perriello has said he will fight for earmarks for the 5th District.
Goode has a seat on the House Appropriations Committee, but congressmen who are not on that committee still manage to get earmarks for their districts. That’s true of Virginia’s Bobby Scott and Thelma Drake, who both got more earmarks than Goode despite not being on House Appropriations. Even Ellison got more earmarks than Goode.
Perriello promises to work hard in Washington, but he first needs to work smart for the 5th District. As a member of a growing Democratic caucus, he will have plenty of opportunities to get Congress to work for us. As a Democrat who has been willing to criticize his party’s past mistakes, we don’t think he will fall in behind Pelosi and the liberals.
“It’s not irrational for voters to be upset with the folks in Washington,” Perriello told us. “… I’ve become increasingly aware of how broken our system is … there’s a gap between our politicians and our people.”
In order to “lead with common sense,” as Perriello puts it, he will have to start in the 5th District.
We want him to place a high priority on constituent service — and do his utmost to ensure a smooth transition and continued service to the people.
We also want him to work hard to be accessible to the people of the 5th District, just like Payne was. We certainly don’t want to elect another Washington creature. There are enough of them already.
We expect him to work with North Carolina congressmen to get the Interstate 785 project moving, once and for all. The same goes for a U.S. 29 bypass around Charlottesville. While that’s a state project, Perriello should work to break the political logjam over that needed bypass.
We want Perriello to fight for earmarks and legislation that will bring federal financial assistance to the 5th District, and we share Perriello’s criticism of Goode’s thin legislative record.
“What we haven’t seen is the big projects … where the big dollars are,” Perriello said of Goode.
Finally, we want Perriello to seek out committee assignments that match the needs of this district. That means committees dealing with energy, rural economic development and transportation.
We expect to receive great criticism for endorsing Perriello over Goode.
But our decision was born out of frustration with a career politician who has already told us he expects to be ineffective as Democrats gain more power in Congress. Just this year, Goode has voted against the tax rebate checks that people throughout the 5th District received this year and he voted against a financial rescue plan that even his own Republicans believed was necessary to stave off more serious economic problems.
If we send Goode back to Washington, how many more times will he vote against our interests? We can’t take that chance.
On Tuesday, it’s time to elect a young man of integrity, energy, faith and hard work. It’s time to send Tom Perriello to Congress.

What a bunch af crap. Goode voted against a stimulus that we took a loan out from China to get. Sometime it has to be paid back. I am sure that AIG enjoyed their vacation that WE provided them after we bailed them out. Now I hear that some of these banks are going to go forward with their millions in bonus’s for executives. So what about STUPID can you people not understand. We bail them out they get bonus’s and vacations. Only a bunch of idiots would consider giving money away to people who have wasted it on luxuries when most of us are living day by day. Not a good investment to invest in failure. No matter who caused this bailing out millionare loosers is not a good plan. Wake up and smell the coffee!
Here is some information, compiled by someone else, that came across my computer. It could be part of the reasoning.
Here is part of the Goode ol’boys network in the 5th District. Blair Construction, American National Bankshares and Mr. Gigmac of the North Theatre Project. The company that did the North Theatre renovations in 2004 is Blair Construction. Well, Mr. Blair is a Goode contributor and Mr. Gignac formerly of the North Theatre project is a bigger contributor. Blair has received tens of millions of municipal and school contracts mostly in the 5th District. Another big link tying to Goode is that Blair is on the board of American National Bankshares. Nearly all of those guys contributed to Goode and Republicans. Timothy J. Clark was the project manager on North Theatre along with many of the other Blair projects. Here is a fraction of the contracts Blair Construction has been awarded over the years.

oldgraymare , great comments .... Thats whats wrong with this area ...Not embracing change!!! No matter what the facts are people are set in they ways and will not believe you. The facts are yes Goode is from the area , but he has neen corrupted by Washington politics . I think trem limits should be set on congressman be it republican, democrat or independent , change is always good let another person have a chance to represent the area. Looking at Southside as a whole from Patrick County to Halifax Coutny , clearly something is not working .
Footbalfan, you are “offsides” buddy - Tom Perriello is a native Virginian - you’d know that if you did some research on the candidates instead of just mindlessly believing all the b**sh** you read in those trashy TV commercials that the Goode campaign has been running. Goode talks a good talk - about how he’s all for us in southside, but look at his actual voting record. He consistently votes AGAINST bills that would help the working class here in Danville and the 5th District….like every single renewable energy bill. He’s been in congress for 12 years now (even though he introduced a bill to limit terms to 12 years) - and he’s sponsored few bills that have ever made it out of committee. Just this past year, he introduced 17 bills (or thereabouts) - but only one has made it out of committee - and its HUGE -so pay attention!! Goode’s main accomplishment this year was to get a post office in Charlottesville renamed. What has Perriello accomplished for southside yet? Nothing YET - we have to get him to congress before he can show us his stuff - and I’m all for getting something done. We need some change for the better around here - maybe more adult education for those who just believe everything they hear without looking up the facts for themselves.
Footballfan is definitely offsides on this play! Tom Perriello grew up in Virginia. I know because he was one of my students at J. T. Henley Middle School in Crozet. His father, Vito, is well known as one of the finest pediatricians in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area. His entire family is known and respected for their contributions to the community.
Tom Perriello is to be commended for expanding his horizons beyond the boundaries of the 5th district. This knowledge, along with his experience, dedication, and integrity, will serve him well as our next Congressman.
Just how does a New York Lawyer understand Southside Virginia better than a native of this area. Virgil is one of us. That slick New Yorker is one of “them.“ Periello fits fine with obama but not Southside Virginia.
You have got to be kidding! Virgil is a fantastic congressman! We could not ask for a better voice in Washington. I should not let this upset or surprise me because I know what a mixed up liberal rag the Danville paper is.
So the Register and Bee supports Tom P? Will wonders ever cease? I still wonder why they also threw their endorsement behind McCain after acknowledging that Sarah Palin is not ready to be President. . oh well!! I think Virgil Goode is ready to retire.
The Register Bee has finally grown some cojones, and stood up for what’s right (as in right and wrong, not right and left). Don’t worry about not seeing much of Perriello here in Southside if he’s elected…..I’m volunteering to staff his Danville office (as a volunteer to work on veterna’s issues)...that’s how much I believe in this young man. Virgil Goode has gotten way too focused (does the word “obsessed” come to mind??) on immigration - it has clouded his judgement on all other matters of importance to district constituents. Goode voted AGAINST the Small Business Financing Improvement Act, the Defense Authorization Act, and almost EVERY bill that would have provided incentives and tax breaks for renewable energy - all because he either didn’t want to remove tax breaks for BIG OIL and/or there was not specific wording in the bill to restrict benefits to US citizens only. Got news for ya Virgil…...LEGAL immigrants arenot the boogey-man. He is just a closet racist who has appealed to the small minded, mean spirited “living in the past” among us. Lets all just “get over it” and start working together to make this beautiful piece of Virginia a showcase for the future - not the hate and bitterness of the past.
Out with the old and in with the new. We need a young, fresh mind with novel ideas, a new attitude, and a more holistic approach. Goode can serve the community in some other way.
