The money woes of rising costs and sluggish revenue plaguing government and business nationwide did not ignore Eden. During its April budget meeting, the Eden City Council included a 5-cent property tax increase to the proposal on the advice of City Manager Brad Corcoran. The new rate would be 63 cents per $100 of assessed property value, and is lower than Eden’s 1990 rate of 69 cents.
Corcoran said the city exhausted all other options.

Reidsville police have disclosed details of a one-car wreck that killed a Reidsville man and injured a second man Monday afternoon.
Christopher Jerome Hamby, 36, of 1137 Lawsonville Ave., was a passenger of Ronnie Lee Ziglar, 40, in a 1983 Chevrolet Camaro. Shortly after 5 p.m., Ziglar was driving east on Lawsonville Avenue when he lost control and ran off the road near Pettigrew Street. The car hit two trees and a utility before stopping on the roadside.

Crack cocaine evidence lost in the mail no problem for Rockingham DA

The Rockingham County District Attorney’s office recently won a case even though some of the most important pieces of evidence were apparently lost in the mail.
“We convicted Josh Kingston on drug possession without having the drugs,” said District Attor-ney Phil Berger Jr. “I know they were sent from the SBI crime lab after testing, but I know they were never received back here locally.”

The suspects are charged with selling marijuana, crack cocaine and/or prescription pills to undercover officers, according to a news release. These cases involve street-level drug buys throughout the county from August 2007 until February, the release states.

Rockingham board looks for money to build schools

The school board continues to debate how to make an estimated $60 million in school improvements with almost half that amount. The county finance department receives enough income dedicated to school construction to safely borrow an estimated $30 million. Depending on the school board’s decision, that amount may replace two elementary schools in need of improvement, possibly three. Thirteen schools in Rockingham County need improvement, but the county estimates it could be years before it has enough money to complete all necessary projects.

Rockingham GED graduates earn their future

To earn a GED, a student must score at least 410 on each of five tests and a cumulative score of at least 2250. Students are tested in social studies, science, language arts/reading, language arts/writing, and math.  Thirty-five earned a cumulative score of 3000 or more, which averages to 600 or higher on each test.  Camillia Sherrod earned a cumulative score of 3400.
