The law firm of the Reidsville city attorney was broken into Monday.

William F. McLeod Jr. and William F. McLeod Sr. reported the incident about 10 a.m., police said. Although there were no signs of forced entry to the front door where muddy footprints originated, it was a “legitimate break-in,“ according to Capt. Guilio Dattero.

“We’ve been here forever, and it’s just the first time and hopefully the last,“ McLeod Jr. said. He has served as Reidsville’s city attorney since January 1999. His law office has been at 408 W. Harrison St. since 1983.

The McLeods said they noticed the footprints throughout their offices. A business check to Rockingham County Tax Department and a personal check to the Reidsville Water Department were missing from the front office, according to the report. McLeod Jr. was missing numerous checks from several bank accounts and a credit card. McLeod Sr. was missing three personal checks from the middle of his book and six boxes containing various denominations of coins.

“We’ve had several break-ins in that immediate area, so we could be looking at the same perpetrator on several (cases),“ Dattero said.

Reidsville police also received a report of a theft after a breaking and entering at 409 Maple Ave. in Reidsville early Sunday afternoon. The total value of the items stolen, including a Wii game system, games and Toshiba laptop computer was $3,670.

Police have received several other reports of thefts after breaking and entering in the past couple of weeks. One happened at a home at 1511 Caswell St. on Saturday evening. The total value of the items stolen, including an Acer laptop computer, was $535. At nearby 523 Boyd St., Reidsville police received a report of a theft after a breaking and entering on Dec. 30. The total value of items stolen, including a Panasonic LCD TV and a DVD player, was $690.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call Reidsville police at 349-1010.
