Reidsville man charged in thefts from Mayodan Wal-Mart

A well-timed stakeout by Mayodan police officers Thursday led to the arrest of a Reidsville man on multiple charges.

Terry Lee Moore, 39, of 125 Rolling Hills Drive, was arrested shortly after midnight Thursday morning at Wal-Mart of Mayodan. Moore was charged with larceny, larceny from a merchant, possession of stolen property and second-degree trespass.

“I was really pleased with the initiative shown by our officers in setting up during the right time-frame to catch this guy in the act,” said Mayodan Police Chief Jim Bullins.

Bullins said a Wal-Mart assistant manager reported Wednesday morning that more than $1,100 worth of cameras and electronics were stolen between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday. The report indicated a tall black male had been spotted in the electronics department during those hours several times from Sunday through Wednesday.

According to the assistant manager’s report, the suspect would pick up cameras and other elec-tronic products, walk over to the automotive section and cut the electronic anti-theft devices from the merchandise.

Bullins said Officer Chris Shively and Lt. Tim Bowman decided to watch the store overnight Wednesday during the hours the suspect had previously been seen. Shortly after midnight, the officers observed Moore entering the store.

In the electronics department, a store employee observed Moore removing camcorders from their packaging and concealing them in his clothing.

“He’s confronted by store security and starts to run,” Bullins said. “But when he gets outside the store, our guys step out and stop him.”

The merchandise recovered Thursday morning was valued at $333.87.

After Moore was taken to the magistrate’s office in Wentworth, Bullins said an identification check revealed Moore was wanted from escaping from jail in the Charlotte area.

Moore’s bail was set at $10,000 and a court date was set for June 1.
