Despite cool weather and a brisk wind, about 150 people turned out Wednesday morning to see Sen. Elizabeth Dole at “A Good, Old Fashion Rockingham County Voter Rally.”
The rally, which ran from 9 to 10 a.m., began with a blessing, a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the Pledge of Allegiance. It was held at the flagpoles in front of the county governmental center in Wentworth.
State Sen. Phil Berger of Eden introduced U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, and shared some kind words about Dole.
“A United States senator does more than just vote on things,” Berger said. “Senator Dole has been someone who’s been there not just for our soldiers, but for us.”
Burr called this the most important election of his lifetime, and said he believes Dole deserves to be re-elected. He asked everyone in attendance to e-mail all of the people in their address books and to serve as character witnesses for Dole.
“Tell your friends and family to do the same thing. If you do that, the outcome of the election will be certain,” Burr said. “You’re the one who has the voice, who has the vote.”
Dole said it was a joy to have so many supporters come out for the rally. She expressed her appreciation and gratitude for the young men and women serving the country, and also thanked veterans.
“To all those who have served over the years, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Dole said.
The wife of former U.S. Senate Majority Leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee Sen. Bob Dole, Elizabeth Dole became North Carolina’s first female senator in 2002. She previously served in both Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush’s presidential administrations.
This year Dole, the Republican incumbent, is running for re-election against five-term state Sen. Kay Hagan, a Democrat. Political observers are expecting a close race.
