Kids and adults dressed in their Halloween best for Treat Street on Washington Street in Eden. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday night, children and adults could visit businesses and homes on Washington Street for candy and the chance to win a costume contest.

Beth Robinson, an employee of the Riverhouse, was outside to greet children and ask about costumes. She said she was very surprised at how elaborate costumes were for Treat Street this year.

“We had a really great turnout this year and we’ve had a lot of original costumes,” Robinson said. “I’ve seen blueberries and even a bubble bath walking down the street. I’ve given out a lot of candy this year and it’s a good, safe way for kids to celebrate Halloween.”

Judith Warren of Judith Warren Boutique and Bridal said she was glad to see so many people on the street this year celebrating.

“I’m glad to see so many families this year,” Warren said. “It has been great to see some of the costumes kids have come up with, and even the adults.”

At 6 p.m., children and adults gathered in Washington Street Park to see what costumes caught the attention of the judges this year. There were three age categories for children and young adults. They ranged from newborn to 3 years old, 4 to 8 years old, and ages 9 and up.

The winner of the first age group was Tanner Rippey, who was Spongebob Squarepants. His parents are Evan and Jennifer Rippey from Eden. The second age group winner was Spencer Springs who dressed up as Jasmine, the genie from Disney’s Aladdin movie. Her parents are Laura and Kevin Springs, and they are from Stoneville. The last winner was Peyton Corum, who dressed up as a bubble bath. Her parents are Vicki and Jason Corum from Reidsville.

Jean Light Kinyon, one of the judges and executive director for the Rockingham County Literacy Project, said she had never seen this many children at one of these events before.

“I’ve never seen anything like this – those kids were dressed to the nines this year,” Kinyon said. “The children were so precious and well-behaved. We had a terrific time and I’m glad families came out this year. That’s what we wanted this to be, a family event.”
