Goode pulls out of Tuesday debate
U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode has pulled out of a scheduled debate with Democratic challenger Tom Perriello.
The televised debate was scheduled to take place Tuesday night at NBC29 in Charlottesville and would be broadcast on WVIR and WSET. Goode said he had a scheduling conflict.
The debate was deliberately scheduled on the same night as the next presidential debate, which will be held at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., to increase viewership, according to the Perriello campaign.
Goode, R-5th, has agreed to debate Perriello one more time before the November election, but he won’t say where.
“There’s just no excuse for this,” Perriello said. “We’ve been working with NBC29 and WSET for over six months on scheduling and setting rules for the debate. I call on Congressman Goode to tell his constituents what other event would be more important than a televised debate for the benefit of the voters.”
Goode said in a telephone interview that he didn’t agree to the NBC29 debate.
“We’ve had two debates, one in Charlottesville and one in Danville,” Goode said. “Three is a good number of debates. I look forward to a third debate.”
Goode said he has had several debate requests and if someone wants to set up a debate, they need to talk to him, not his staff.
“I make the decision about debates,” Goode said.
Perriello, however, said the incumbent congressman is “running away” from the issues.
“The truth is Congressman Goode is just running away from his terrible record on the economy, gas prices, and so many other problems facing middle class families,” he said. “His constituents deserve the opportunity to hear him defend that record, and hear my vision for bringing jobs and economic relief back to Southside. This is cowardice, not leadership.”
Goode said Perriello is making a mountain out of a molehill.
“We’re going to do another debate,” the congressman said.
Neal Bennett, news director of WVIR, said late Wednesday that negotiations are ongoing to reschedule the televised debate.

You are one to talk about someones mental ability. You assume that was what was meant. Now break assume down. The seed planted was your own. Sir you have engaged in a battle of wits unarmed and found to be lacking. Try facts and not feelings.
and as for confirming something I don’t want to- I am not interested in Tom’s sex life (or lack thereof) in any way, shape, form. I could not care less about something so unimportant and irrelevant to the issues. The
shame is on you.
Don’t try to pull that bait and switch on me. I knew you would play innocent if some one called you on it. Everyone knows exactly what you meant and what kind of seed you were attempting to plant. A devious mind does not make one intelligent.
LOL..more Elephant spin! LOL
I asked a question and you concluded something on your own. No mudd was slung just a simple question. Maybe you should look before you leap to conclusions. You may confirm something that you did not want to.
johnster, you are a funny man. Pick a weapon and truly defend this country? As ex-military myself I have to wonder, were you in the military? As it stands the only thing this country needs to be defended from is closed minds, you know…such as yours!
Yes, johnster, you hit a sore spot. You made an ugly insinuation that speaks more to your character than to anyone else’s. From what I’ve seen over the last decade or so,
that is what republicans do best- avoid dealing with real issues by resorting to gossip, mudslinging, and fear-mongering. Anytime they feel frightened of losing their power, they rely on misdirection and prestidigitation.
Tom has done nothing in a hellhole. Until he joins the miltary and picks up a weapon and truly defends this country he knows nothing about a hellhole. Pittbull? Right. He was protected the whole time. Obviously I hit a sore spot when I asked about why no picture of a girlfriend. Afterall in most cases behind every good man there is a better woman. Barney Frank would be proud.
Yes, family IS important. Perriello’s family is steeped in service and devotion to others, something that is in Tom Perriello’s DNA. While others his age were partying, cruising, and having a good time, Tom was serving in some of the toughest hellholes on the planet fighting for people who were losing life and limb to warlords, terrorists, and hostile governments. Yes, he loves his family and is close to them all, but he’s not one to stand by and complain when others are suffering. His record is one of compassion and service, but let someone try and take advantage of the weak or marginalized, and he’s a pit bull you don’t want to tangle with. It’s really no wonder Goode is chickening out of tonight’s debate.
“Could someone tell me why Perriello is not married or if he has a girlfriend? I cannot seem to find him in a picture with a woman other than his mother. A family is important when it comes to a political figure.“
Um, that’s kind of ridiculous. I’m sure there are many good reasons to oppose Perriello without dragging that sort of innuendo into it.
