U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode has pulled out of a scheduled debate with Democratic challenger Tom Perriello.
The televised debate was scheduled to take place Tuesday night at NBC29 in Charlottesville and would be broadcast on WVIR and WSET. Goode said he had a scheduling conflict.
The debate was deliberately scheduled on the same night as the next presidential debate, which will be held at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., to increase viewership, according to the Perriello campaign.
Goode, R-5th, has agreed to debate Perriello one more time before the November election, but he won’t say where.
“There’s just no excuse for this,” Perriello said. “We’ve been working with NBC29 and WSET for over six months on scheduling and setting rules for the debate. I call on Congressman Goode to tell his constituents what other event would be more important than a televised debate for the benefit of the voters.”
Goode said in a telephone interview that he didn’t agree to the NBC29 debate.
“We’ve had two debates, one in Charlottesville and one in Danville,” Goode said. “Three is a good number of debates. I look forward to a third debate.”
Goode said he has had several debate requests and if someone wants to set up a debate, they need to talk to him, not his staff.
“I make the decision about debates,” Goode said.
Perriello, however, said the incumbent congressman is “running away” from the issues.
“The truth is Congressman Goode is just running away from his terrible record on the economy, gas prices, and so many other problems facing middle class families,” he said. “His constituents deserve the opportunity to hear him defend that record, and hear my vision for bringing jobs and economic relief back to Southside. This is cowardice, not leadership.”
Goode said Perriello is making a mountain out of a molehill.
“We’re going to do another debate,” the congressman said.
Neal Bennett, news director of WVIR, said late Wednesday that negotiations are ongoing to reschedule the televised debate.

The problem with most people on the left is that they do not have a clue who God is. It is the left that wants to take God off of everything and allow one Athiest to set standards for the rest of the country. Our founding fathers wanted a country with freedom to worship and ONE religion would not control the country like in Europe. But another lefty said religion is poison. The funny thing is as China moves away from Communism we move closer to it with the help of lefties.

To you and everyone else, I know it’s tempting to hurl insults at each other, I’ve probably done it myself, but sniping at each other for the sake of politicians…is they really worth it?
This country is in a mess and a lot of it can be traced right back to the people in power on the left AND on the right. No matter which man wins the election, we’re still going to face a tough road ahead thanks to our two miserable political parties.
At least I have the guts to admit when I am wrong. I don’t have a god complex like the you folks off to the right.
At least Goode can practice Law in VA. Perriello can do nothing but guest speaker and weak minded politics. As usual there is a Democrat having to give an apology.

I only post with this ID, I have no others. I quoted “johnster’s” post in mine so that it would be clear that his was the one I was responding to. My post, if you’ll read it again, states that surely there are better reasons to oppose Perriello and support Goode than what johnster insinuated in his post. I thought mine was a very fair and level-headed response. I’m sorry that you took it wrong and decided classify me a shill or troll ID.
Johnster, jaydebee, and all the other names you post under- I never claimed anyone is or isn’t gay. nor did I suggest you were picking on anyone but me. so far, you’ve been wrong a lot.
