WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello announced Monday that he has been appointed to the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

The Veterans’ Affairs Committee has jurisdiction over veterans’ benefits, pensions, VA hospitals and treatment centers.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to improve the lives of veterans in our district and across the nation by serving on this important committee,” Perriello, D-5th, said in a written statement. “Veterans in Southside Virginia have an urgent need for expanded access to services and that’s what I’ll fight for on this committee. The brave men and women who put their lives on the lines for our democracy deserve nothing less than the best care, and I am honored to serve them in this capacity.”

Last week, the freshman congressman was appointed to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
