Preliminary testing found that Monday’s suspicious white powder is most likely nothing of concern, said Danville Fire Chief David Eagle.

Danville’s Hazardous Materials team found that there was a 98 percent chance that the powder was not dangerous, Eagle said. Virginia State Police also took a sample, which will be tested in a Richmond lab. Eagle said the state tests could take a while.

The Hazardous Materials team responded Monday evening to the Danville Police Department, where a Pittsylvania County man brought the white powder, which he found on his porch. Police Chief Philip Broadfoot said the man scooped the powder into a cup. When he arrived to the police department, officers told the man to return the substance to his car. They then notified the Danville Fire Department.
