Here’s a look at upcoming events around the Dan River Region:

FRIDAY
November 6

STEAK SUPPER: Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post No. 647, U.S. 58 across from Danville Toyota, will hold a steak supper from 6 to 8 p.m.  The cost is $10 which in-cludes rib-eye steak, salad, baked potato, bread, home-made desserts and drink.  Proceeds to help needy veterans and their families.

POPPY SALE AT SAM’S CLUB: The American Legion Auxiliary Dan River Unit 1097 will be distributing poppies at Sam’s Club on Nov. 6-7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

STEW SALE: Southside Sam’s, a local nonprofit Good Sam camping club, will be holding a stew and bake sale at Jones’ Market on Mount Cross Road with stew for $4 per quart. The stew master is Dan Chattin.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE CONFERENCE: The eighth annual Alzheimer’s Disease Educational Conference will be held at the Salem Civic Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The conference, “Best Prac-tices in Dementia Care” will focus on what’s new in the world of research and creative interventions in Alzheimer’s care and support. SATURDAY
November 7

SCORPIONS ANNUAL TOY RUN: The Scorpions 24th Annual Toy Run for the Salvation Army will be held at the Eagles Lodge (Old T-Bird Building) U.S. 58, from noon to 10 p.m. Bike show is set from 1 to 5 p.m., with bands playing throughout the day.

BRUNSWICK STEW/BAKE SALE: Floral Hills United Methodist Church, 145 Mountain Hill Road, will hold a Brunswick stew and bake sale, ready at 11 a.m. for $4.50 per quart.

SERTOMA CLUB STEW SALE: The Sertoma Club of Danville will have Brunswick stew on sale at Dorton Insurance Agency, 427 Piney Forest Road. The price is $4.50 per quart and dip time will start at 9:30 a.m.

POPPY DAY: American Legion Auxiliary Unit 325 will be celebrating Poppy Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Walmart. The poppy is the symbol of sacrifice that veterans made for our country and each year Unit 325 has poppies available to the public. Donations go toward veteran’s programs. Miss Poppy, Reagan Jackson, will be at Walmart at noon to salute veterans and support the auxiliary. 

REMEMBRANCE SERVICE AT VETERANS MEMORIAL: There will be a Veterans Day service at 11 a.m. at the Danville-Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial in Dan Daniel Park. The keynote speaker will be former Rep. Virgil Goode. The service will be followed by a patriotic concert beginning at 12:30 p.m.

MOTORCYCLE RIDE TO RAISE RUNDS FOR VETERANS MEMORIAL: Soldiers of the Cross Motorcycle Club will hold “The Ride to Remember” in support of the Danville-Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial. Registration for the ride will begin at noon, with the riders leaving Thunder Road Harley Davidson, 4960 Riverside Drive, for the Veterans Memorial at 1 p.m. Registration is $10 and T-shirts commemorating the ride will be available for $15. All proceeds will go to the Veter-ans Memorial maintenance and improvement fund. For more information, call Keith Field at (336) 209-3050.

STEAK SUPPER: Ringgold Volunteer Fire & Rescue will hold a steak supper from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The meal consists of 8 oz. boneless rib-eye steak, baked potato, salad bar, beverage and dessert for $14. STEAK DINNER: The Riceville-Java Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a steak dinner at the station on Va. 640 at 5 p.m. Cost is $12 for adults, with child’s hot dog plate for $5. Tickets available from any firefighter, reservations not needed, just come to the station, ready to eat and carry out also available. All proceeds benefit the department.

YARD/BAKE SALE: The Whitmell Relay Team is sponsoring a yard/bake sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Deer Run and Piney Forest Road (across from Smith Davis Tire).  New and used goods will be for sale.  Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

AMERICAN LEGION POST 1097 STEW: American Legion Post 1097, 17 Fairfield Ave., will hold a stew sale beginning at 11:30 a.m. for $5 per quart. Please support your Veterans.

BRUNSWICK STEW SALE: Christ The King Lutheran Church, 1172 Franklin Turnpike, will have a stew sale ready at noon for $4.50 per quart.

SUNDAY
November 8

VETERAN’S DAY PARADE: A Veteran’s Day Parade will be held at 2:30 p.m. from Main to Craghead Street with Staff Sgt. James Take, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, where he was wounded in action, as grand marshal.
