Vernon Hill man arrested for killing opossum while on police ride along
A Vernon Hill man, on an approved ride along with a Danville police officer, wound up being arrested for killing an opossum while on that ride.
Lt. John Henderson issued a news release Tuesday that said Evan Bryce Schuler, 22, was participating in the department’s ride-along program on June 20. The officer stopped to refuel on Monument Street, and Schuler left the vehicle.
“Schuler jumped from the front passenger seat of the police vehicle without saying a word and ran toward an opossum that was running along the perimeter fence,” the news release said. “Schuler kicked the opossum several times, killing it.”
When two officers confronted Schuler, he told them he lives on a farm and opossums routinely kill his chickens. Schuler told the officers his behavior was “instinctive.”
Following an investigation, Schuler was charged with cruelty to animals. He was arrested Tuesday and released on a summons to appear in Danville General District Court.

Alright now! I was going to leave it alone. I mean, we have people on here who are for the DPD. And we got people against them. We’ve got people who love animals. And we got those who think it’s just a dxxx possum. We got people from out of town who are embarassed to be from Danville. And we got people in town who’d rather be with young girls in Chatham. We got real firemen on here. And we got the “mine is bigger than yours” crowd. And that’s all fine. Everybody’s had their say.
But, when you bring up Shania Twain, that’s when you done gone too far!! If you don’t think Shania Twain is sizzling hot, well you’re just not looking hard enough. Ya better get back on Youtube and correct yourself!
CAN I GET A WITNESS!!
CORRECTION: This comment was meant for FootballFan. Sorry, Fireman!
And FootballFan, that “teeny bopper and the police” comment - I mean, really, is that the best you can do with your Chatham Middle School education? I realize you were 16 when you quit school there, but really, my daughter could think of one better than that.
Again, you’re a wanker. Don’t know what it is? Look it up.
Oh, Fireman, just stop wasting your typing on trying to convince FootballFan that it was wrong. Its just what they do out at his trailer in the woods. Just after they jack up their Chevelle on cinderblocks so they can change the oil (which they never complete and leave it there for months)—they go around and kick cats and opossums and drink malt liquor and strum their banjos and talk about how hot Shania Twain is and who really runs the Tightsqueeze fire department. That’s just how they do things in HIS department.

Football fan, there is a difference in killing something out of necessity and killing just to kill. If your father raised you right, you would know that.
No tree hugging possum lover here, just stating what most logical people would.
Truth hurts,
Help turn in the real criminals instead of just watching what they do and hoping the police will show up by osmosis. Listen to any scanner these days, those men and women are out there busting their humps running from call to call.
This person killed an animal in an officers presence, was the officer just supposed to look away. And again regardless of size, charging dog vs. retreating possum. Not that I condone the shooting either, but it was animal cruelty no matter what type of animal, it could have been someone’s cat or dog. Killing it because a possum kills his chickens is crazy.
JAF, you people are so easy. I really enjoy getting a rise out of you. I know, I really should not pick on those with such a low I.Q. but it is fun. By the way it sounds like you know a lot about entertaining “teenie boppers” Maybe thats the next crime Danville PD can bust. Hmm…
The killing of the opossum may have been unwarranted..but there are REAL criminals running loose, thats who should be charged. How can the ride along be charged for killing an opossum, yet an officer who kills a family’s dog not be reprimanded at all…That just doesn’t make sense. The Chief needs to choose his battles a little better…or maybe the next one will!
Regardless of what kind of animal it was, it still didn’t deserve what happen to it. What he did was just plain out meanness and I’m glad that the PD didn’t try to cover it up. Anyone that would harm an animal on purpose I think would harm a person.
FootballFan said: FIREMAN, I am so glad you do not fight fire with me. We have real men on my department not tree hugging opossum lovers.
I say: Where do you live and fight fires, FootballFan? Tightsqueeze? Chatham? Axton? Yeah, you’re a really big man. I bet you keep the teeny bopper volunteers at your firehouse in Tightsqueeze in awe by telling stories of how your battle fires without gear and pick up cars to save helpless victims all by yourself.
Wanker…
What an idiot. Because they kill his chickens??? Was it that one? It could have been one of his cousins and he killed the wrong opposum.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!! I am so glad I do not live in Danville anymore. I agree with the other writer that it is embarrassing to tell people where I am from. It was a opossum, the only charge that should have been made was littering if he did not clean up the mess. FIREMAN, I am so glad you do not fight fire with me. We have real men on my department not tree hugging opossum lovers. I say kill opossums any way you can, kick it, shoot it, turn the dog on it, whatever. Wait a minute I solved it! The dog shot by the PD must have killed a opossum so they went to deadly force to protect the opossum population! Man I am gifted!
