With power saws buzzing in the background, Pittsylvania County officials and medical professionals gathered Tuesday to announce the opening of a new urology clinic near Chatham.

The Danville Urological Clinic and Fresenius Medical Care, both with offices in Danville, are partnering and opening the new site to be able to serve more patients, Pliny Arenas, area manager of the Danville Group of Fresenius, said Tuesday.

“We’re bursting at the seams in our current clinic,” Arenas said. “We’ll be able to serve the area with a state of the art clinic and offer new services including evening clinic hours.”

County officials said they were very pleased with plans for the clinic, which is scheduled to open sometime after September.

“This is just another step in more and more commercialization between here and Tightsqueeze,” Chatham-Blairs Supervisor Hank Davis said. “It’s good for Pittsylvania County.”

Arenas expects the clinic to serve about 70 people.

He said the clinic is scheduled to be open six days a week, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Evening clinic hours would likely be between 7 p.m. and 5 or 6 a.m. for patients who work during the day or patients who live alone and are dependent on other people, Arenas said.

Currently, there are about 250 patients receiving treatment in Danville, officials said.

Arenas said he has heard complaints from a number of patients who have to travel for over an hour to get to Danville, and is sure the new clinic will facilitate more access to care.

“I’m so pleased (construction) is going so smoothly,” said Arenas, who has set up many clinics. “This is the warmest welcome I’ve had.”

“We’re looking forward to being able to serve the community with excellence in care,” Dr. Marc Roman, a nephrologist with the Danville Urological Clinic, added.
