Piedmont Access to Health Services (PATHS) is one of 24 health centers in Virginia that will be receiving money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand services for people who are uninsured or underinsured.
The company has three primary health care facilities in Southside - at the Danville, Chatham and Martinsville locations of Health Center of the Piedmont.
Kay Crane, CEO of PATHS, said she expects to receive $189,000 of the $5.2 million allocated to Virginia.
She said the stimulus funding will be a big help, especially in light of recent layoffs at Goodyear and the closing of the Corning plant.
“We’re excited about it,“ Crane said. “This will have a positive impact on our ability to provide health care to those without insurance.“
Crane said the centers provide primary care services, but there is an urgent need to add other services, including diagnostic testing and dental care.
“This comes at a perfect time,“ she said.
The money is being released through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to meet the needs of the uninsured. The grantees submitted plans explaining how the funds would be used to expand those services.
HHS estimates the funds will provide care to an additional 37,513 patients in Virginia over the next two years.

PATHS is a non profit organization that helps ininsured and underinsured people in or area. They have 3 federally qualified health centers (Health Centers of the Piedmont in Danville, Chatham and Martinsville)that offer a sliding fee scale for patients whether they have insurance or not. Some people have high deductibles, so they still can’t afford to go to the doctor. The sliding fee program helps them afford healthcare. PATHS also has a program to help patients get specialty care, called Project Access, which is a wonderful program. PATHS also has a program to help with medications for people that can’t afford their medicine, and there is also a program to assist HIV/AIDS patients, named CHAAP. How is helping those less fortunate, penalizing anyone???? When you get laid off from your job or encounter hardtimes, you will be grateful for these non-profit agencies! I work and volunteer for non-profit organizations and what you (gasoline) need is compassion for those in need because one day you may need help too.
PATHS helps more people than just the uninsured. Do some research of all of the wonderful things that PATHS does, and you will see that they go along way for helping everyone in the community that needs healthcare, regardless of their ability to pay. They are NON-PROFIT, and are wonderful assets to the area. They were and are there when no other doctor or hospital in town wants to touch the patients that can’t afford or have no insurance. So,no PATHS is not penalizing ANYONE, only providing help for everyone they can.
hmmmmm, what about the people who are busting their rear ends workinf 2 jobs +, just to barely pay for insurance?
Oh, that’s right….let’s penalize them!!
