A second community meeting on the Route 29 access management study will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chatham Middle School.
The study is sponsored by Pittsylvania County and the Danville Metropolitan Planning Organization with assistance and funding support from the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.
The study’s purpose is to maintain an efficient flow of traffic, improve safety and accommodate multi-modal uses where appropriate between Route 726 and Route 718 along U.S. 29. A transportation planning team from Vanesse Hangen Brustlin Inc., through a contract with Pittsylvania County, is holding the meeting.
The first meeting was held in March. Residents expressed safety concerns along the stretch of highway, including bad visibility, no deceleration or acceleration lanes when entering and leaving U.S. 29, and numerous school buses, commuters, tractor-trailers and other large vehicles.
The study seeks immediate and long-term solutions for the U.S. 29 corridor to manage development and growth patterns. The former mostly rural county roadway has become a critical transportation corridor for the region, linking urban, suburban and rural areas and spurring a growth in economic development opportunity.
For more information on the study or the meeting, contact County Planner Greg Sides at (434) 432-7974 or .
