PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Investigators are waiting for an autopsy to identify human remains found Friday on Park Springs Road in Caswell County.

The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office said the remains were found at about 6:45 p.m. in a wooded area in the Bethel community after an area land owner called 911 to report that a human skull had been dug up by the family’s dog.

Criminal investigators with the sheriff’s office secured the scene and began a search of the area with the assistance of the department’s trained cadaver dog, the N.C. Department of Correction’s canine handlers and the State Bureau of Investigation, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The remains were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy, the release states.

The sheriff’s office said there have been no reports of a missing person in the area.
