UPDATE: Tornado Warning targets Gretna
3 p.m. UPDATE
At 2:55 p.m. National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado 6 miles west of Gretna,moving east at 15 mph.
Locations impacted include Gretna, Chalk Level and Mt airy.

2:30 p.m. UPDATE
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Pittsylvania County until 3:15 p.m.
At 2:08 p.m. local law enforcement reported a possible tornado west of Penhook, moving east at 15 mph.
Locations impacted include Penhook, Ajax, Climax and Pittsville.
ORIGINAL ALERT
At 1:24 p.m. National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing producing a tornado. This storm was located near Rocky Mount and moving east at 20 mph.

Locations impacted include Rocky Mount, Sontag, western Smith Mountain Lake, southern Smith Mountain Lake and Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
The weather service says this is a dangerous storm and warns if you are in its path, prepare immediately for damaging winds, destructive hai and deadly cloud o ground lightning. People outside should move to a shelter, preferably inside a strong building but away from windows.
If on or near Smith Mountain Lake get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. The weater service says lightning can strike out to 15 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
