Perriello defends health care vote

Amid callous criticism of his vote, Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, defended his support of the sweeping health care reform bill that narrowly passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Saturday night.

Perriello held a conference call Monday for media that included a Collinsville small business owner, a director of community health centers in the district, a Lynchburg physician, a Charlottesville pastor and a Martinsville resident who is uninsured.

“This has obviously been a very long process of several months,” Perriello said of work on the bill. “I think it’s been important that we took that time… In the choice between solving a problem and sitting on the sidelines, I thought it was important to solve this problem.”

Perriello mentioned reducing the federal deficit, reducing premiums for middle class families and reducing regional disparities facing rural hospitals as “major successes” in the bill’s passing, which he called a “victory” for Americans.

“We were able to … turn this into a bill that I think will be a lifeline for health care in rural communities,” he said.

He acknowledged he would like to have seen inter-state competition and increased portability included in the bill, along with increased tort and malpractice reform — all pieces Perriello said he hoped to see in the Senate version. He reiterated that he would not support a bill that included federal funding for abortions.

“I’m hopeful that they’ll put the best ideas on the table and we’ll bring them together in a merged bill,” he said.

Perriello indicated that a goal of health care reform was to increase preventative care and services, something which both Dr. William Blackman, a Lynchburg internist, and Rod Manifold, executive director of Central Virginia Health Services’ community centers, strongly supported.

“The current health-care delivery system is really a mess,” Blackman said. “While this bill is certainly not perfect… this has certainly gotten the ball rolling.”

Shuna Ingram, a Martinsville resident who lost her job and health insurance in September, said she supported the affordability credits that would allow her to purchase insurance cheaper through an exchange.

Ellen Jessee owns a small business in Collinsville and cannot afford the rising cost of insurance premiums for her 10 employees. Jessee supported the ability to pool with other small businesses to negotiate lower prices.

Perriello said the “historic” House vote was an opportunity to use a market-based approach to “close a gap” in coverage. He said the single most important thing to his reelection was the economy and that he was proud to be a part of the group that “finally stepped up and did the tough work to tackle that problem where so many before have failed.”

“This is first and foremost an economic issue,” Perriello said. “…But it’s also about who we are as a society.”

Perriello to hold telephone town hall meeting Thursday
Perriello invites 5th District constituents to participate in a free telephone town hall meeting on health care reform Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. To participate, call (877) 269-7289 and enter PIN 14581.

dind,
You are expecting too much of Miles. He has no understanding of how the military operates.  His entire life has been void of service. It is all about him you see.

Yes, Miles I did.  It made no sense then, and it makes no sense now.  You see, when you serve in the military, you obey the orders of those that rank more highly than you do.  This was 20 years ago, there was no “whistle blower” programs then.

“I know, I was in the military for 8 years.  At times I was told to spend money, even though my staff needed nothing, just to keep our budget amount the same for the following year” dind

Yeah.  And you probably did it didn’t you although you are appalled at abuse?

I agree.  A good option Rockit, one I had not heard before.  I will spew some vitriol on occasion, but directed at the public officials, not the americans on these blogs.  and c’mon rockit…even I claimed President Shrub as my president!!  :)  There are some great ideas being bandied about.  Devolving into name calling and such is not productive to the discussion.  I agree with the fraud thing, there is tons of waste and abuse.  I know, I was in the military for 8 years.  At times I was told to spend money, even though my staff needed nothing, just to keep our budget amount the same for the following year!!!

Hymanator1 - Miles feels like anybody opposed to his President is “harebrained”.  But hey, let’s give credit where credit is due—-at least he didn’t called me racist this time.

Watchman - your point is well taken about fraud.  However, as the 60 minutes program showed last weekend, fraud is rampant in all these government programs.  If you really want to eliminate fraud, you have to elminate all these government programs.  If you don’t want to do that, and you still want to provide care to people who can’t afford it, direct pay care is one way to do it.  Not saying it’s the only way, not even saying it’s the best way.  But, it should be part of the conversation.

Yeti - please explain your last comment directed at me.  I haven’t been in touch for most of the day so maybe I missed something but I just don’t get your big mean Democrat’s thing.

Oh, I almost forgot, he’s not my President!

Nuff said.

Less than a 40% turnout of registered voters in the last election. The polls predicted a heavy win for the right early on. I’m not excusing apathy, just stating facts.

Rockit: I will call your President and ask him to make those big mean Democrat’s stop picking on the poor little Republican’s.

Where could they have learned such behavior???

Danv,

If Periello votes for or against any bill, he owes it to his constituents to give an explanation of why he voted the way he did.  Otherwise, he is not representing the people but his own self interests.  Is it more important for a representative to vote with his party, or to vote the way a majority of his constituents vote?  Does he realize that the majority of his constituents voted republican in the last election?  I would say he did not represent his district accurately and does indeed owe an explanation.

I find alot of these arguments very interesting and food for thought. Why however should we as insurance purchasers pay for the one who cannot afford insurance? The cost of these people are added to our treatment costs because god knows the hospital is not going to eat it. Doesn’t it make sense to have everryone covered so the expense is covered? If a person with no insurance splats himself all over the highway and incurs tremendous cost we all pay for him. However if he had insurance he would be covered and thus the cost is not passed on.
I’m afraid direct pay would be riddled with fraud. Look at direct pay to welfare recepiants.
