Obama sets up campaign in Danville-to hold open house

The Danville headquarters for Barack Obama will hold an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Riverside Shopping Center near Subway. The public is invited to attend.
(Original story:)Sheila Baynes has been involved in Democratic Party politics in Danville pushing 20 years.
Never in that time has she seen national democratic operatives come here to boost there’s chances of winning.
“Never, in all the years I have been involved in democratic politics that I am aware of, has the city of Danville had campaign organizers come to Danville for a democratic presidential campaign and said ‘we are here to help you organize,’ we are opening shop in Danville. Never,” Baynes said.
That has changed this year.
Obama’s Virginia campaign announced a host of regional field directors this week — including Danville.
Baynes said the support is welcome, and it shows Obama’s staff believes Virginia is in play.
“This is a result of the overwhelming support of Barack Obama in Virginia and in Danville. Danvillians understand that failed policies of the Bush administration cannot continue and that Obama offers hope and opportunity for a new tomorrow,” she said. “We are very excited about this opportunity to work with the campaign. Danville has many ‘independent’ voters and we will work to gain their support.”
Obama’s Virginia spokesman said the campaign has a commitment to Danville. They plan on opening a campaign office here soon, and they know they have work to do.
“We feel that there’s headway to be made in Danville and Southside,” Kevin Griffis. “People in those communities who are hurting and have taken the brunt of Bush economics.”
He said jobs have gone overseas. People are paying $4 a gallon for gasoline, and believe they’re ready for change.
“It’s up to us to make that case that Barack is right and he will deliver,” he said.
A close observer of national and state politics isn’t surprised either by the attention Danville is getting from Obama’s campaign — and added it makes sense.
This is happening all over the country. Obama has 150 organizers on the ground in the swing-state Missouri, to a few dozen for McCain,” said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Virginia Politics and a political science professor at the University of Virginia.
These organizers will help maximize voter turnout — especially among African-American voters. Sabato said Obama is likely to get upwards of 95 percent of the African-American vote in November.
“So he doesn’t need to worry about getting a fix on black voters, he just registers them and makes sure they vote. McCain’s automatic vote is less solid and less easily identifiable,” Sabato said.
Obama campaign representatives met with supporters in Caswell County Saturday.
Organizers met in the Gunn Memorial Library to discuss topics such as voter registration to increase their chances of carrying Caswell County. The North Carolina Obama campaign also plans to have a coordinator.
President Bush carried traditionally Democratic Caswell County narrowly in 2004 and 2000.
Sabato said organizing voters in these area is a smart strategy.
“You don’t have to carry a county to gain from it. You need to add a few points to your total, thus reducing the opponent’s margin in potentially unfriendly territory. That means that McCain can’t build enough of a lead in rural areas to overcome the likely Obama majorities in the cities, university towns, and Northern Virginia. The same theory holds in North Carolina, another Obama-targeted state. It may or may not work but it is sound electoral strategy, Sabato said.

Reader Reactions
On National Public Radio, the coverage is fairly balanced. Is it really lopsided on the network news?
I wouldn’t mind a really strong third party that would stand a chance against the established two. I think it’s unlikely, however.
I’ve sure noticed how Sen. Obama gets alot of coverage on the news as his opposition doesn’t. Gee I wonder why? Could it have anything to do with the liberal media we have here in this country? I think we need more then a 2 party system in place as well. Perhaps that will give us a person who doesn’t have any connections with Washington and then the people will be represented as our for fathers had intended!
Has anyone noticed how Obama gets more press than McCain? How much more pro Obama than McCain the Media is? =???
WOW. Who is (The Truth)? Stop being so negative and get a real life. It is people (maybe?) like you the reason that places like Danville can not grow and prosper. I will not dare take your opinion from you, but what are you doing to positively help with JOBS, GAS, FOOD PRICES INCREASE, EDUCATION, CRIME, etc. We have plenty of HOT AIR. It is time for a CHANGE. Nothing against Jessie Jackson, but the man (like you & I) have his own personal issues and does not have a whole lot of room to judge.
The websites I posted are unbiased organizations designed to present facts on all candidates. They do not take sides, and they have no more to do with Socialism or Islam than “The Truth” does. Of course, those who make the kind of comments like the last one posted by “The Truth” probably would be unable to read the factual information contained on those sites. I for one want to know all I can about both candidates before I make an INFORMED decision and not one based on ignorance and prejudice. By seeking factual information, I can learn the truth about whether Obama is a Muslim or Socialist and whether McCain is corrupt and unethical or a Bush flunky and warmonger.
Check out sites for Socialists? I really want to read about a Muslim Candidate with big ole Johnny Carson ears who cannot take a joke. The Red scare happened way too early in our history. It is here now. Obama does not mind $10 a gallon gas afterall we will be paying for his limo. Even Jesse Jackson said something about “cutting that ..... off.“ Obama’s preacher is a racist. Obama flipflops more than a fish on a river bank..
How sad that, instead of posting useful comments and criticism, readers feel they must insult those who do not have the same opinions as they. This is partly why our country is in trouble. Rather than throwing around buzzwords like so far to the left, socialist, and Bush cronies or misspelling famous names like Stalin (Who was Stallen?), we need thoughtful, educated comments. I will agree at least with the man who said that we need some people to come and school the voters on these matters. The voters, however, can school themselves if they will just take the time. May I suggest that the thoughtful, educated readers check sites like www.votesmart.org and www.FactCheck.org?
Baynes is so far to the left that she she thinks that doin’ the right thing is wrong and she does not wanna be right. I guess that is why she is a Socialist Democrat. Subway will probably get robbed when the thralls of welfare people think they are serving free meals. “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.“ Reverse that and you have Baynes and crew.
Great for our area! Time out for Bush cronies! Enough is enough!
I agree. The man is a socialist. We may as well vote for Stallen or Hitler. The scary thing is most folks don’t even realize this. I think we need some people to come and school the voters on these matters.
