CHATHAM – Teresa Easley was sworn in as Pittsylvania County’s new treasurer Monday afternoon.

Easley, who takes office today, won a special election held Nov. 4 to replace Shirley Simpson, who died in May.

Clerk of Circuit Court H.F. Haymore swore in Easley, who was flanked by her parents, Carson and Jean Dalton. Judge Charles J. Strauss presided over the ceremony.

Haymore showed mixed emotions about Easley’s voter-approved promotion, expressing happiness at her new endeavor and sadness at her departure from his office.

“This is a bittersweet day for me,” Haymore said during a speech following Easley’s oath. More than 60 people attended the ceremony held in Circuit Court.

Easley has worked in the clerk’s office since the early 1980s. She has been employed under four circuit court judges and has adapted to each one, Haymore said.

“That takes a really, really unique person,” he said. “Teresa has been a real asset to me and all four of the judges.”

Easley choked up with emotion while thanking her supporters. She also voiced appreciation to friends and family, as well as co-workers for what they have taught her.

“The people have molded me into what I am,” she said, referring to everyone she has interacted with during her nearly 30 years of working in county government.

Glenn Brown was interim county treasurer until Monday. He had opted against running for the office.

The treasurer collects, protects and disburses county funds, including taxes and fees.

Easley defeated Kate Berger and Chad Miller on Nov. 4. Berger said she is meeting with officials from the State Board of Elections to discuss allegations of precincts missing treasurer candidates from their ballots during the elections. She wished Easley well in her new position.

“I sincerely wish her the best,” Berger said. “I hope she does a great job because the county certainly needs it.”

The treasurer’s annual salary is $80,000.
