New Greek eatery opens in downtown Danville

Ted Maurakis was laid off from his job at Columbia Flooring five months ago. He applied for numerous jobs at several new companies opening in Danville, but received no takers.

So, Maurakis decided to become his own entrepreneur. He reopened the Royal Palms Restaurant last week and named it Theo’s – his name in Greek – and hired five people.

“We specialize in Greek-American food,” Maurakis said. “The Greek-styled chicken is popular — especially due to spanakopita made by Lillian Pappas. I’m selling it every day. That way, our customers can get primed for the Greek Food Fest next year.”

Customers say they like what they see.

Ben Kammerman said he is fond of Theo’s fried chicken and chicken tenders because of his diet.

“Very good. Very good,” Kammerman said.

His son, Matt, has 13 years of experience as a chef. He said the food Maurakis is serving is first-rate.

“I think it’s very superior,” Matt Kammerman said. “I like the cheeseburgers and reubens. They’re great.”

Delivery will be offered to downtown locations, Danville Regional Medical Center, CIT and the Ballou Park area.

Maurakis said orders can be called or faxed in. 621 Main St., phone: 791-3880, fax: 791-4544

Theo’s is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is a smoke-free establishment. Maurakis said customers will be able to enjoy their food better if there’s no smoking.

He said city officials have been helping with the opening of Theo’s, by telling downtown stores and businesses that the restaurant is open and promoting the new restaurant on the city cable access channel.

Location,Location,Location!!!I hear that a lot on TV.I think the Choice of Location in this case was a Bad Idea.A cheap lease wont overcome not having customers.

I would be much more likely to try it if it WAS not downtown—I dont like every time I turn around having some poor soul begging me for money—happens every time I dare venture “down there.“
How about opening up in that “brand new” million dollar shopping center we are all now paying for with higher utility bills and taxes—last time I rode by was maybe one or two cars in the home depot parking lot—plenty of parking at least!

Yum. I have loved Greek food ever since I visited Greece while in the Navy. I didn’t see any mention of Gyros or Souvlaki in the article. I hope they are on the menu. Gyro or Souvlaki with some Tzatziki. MMM ok I know where I’m going for lunch today!!

Great!! However, The Register and Bee should have provided an address of the restaurant and a telephone number!! And since he takes fax orders, the fax number!!

What a shock that the city is actually promoting & supporting a new restaurant downtown!
