Nanoscience summer program offered for Danville-area teachers

DANVILLE — The University of Virginia is offering a free weeklong seminar in July on teaching nanotechnologies to middle and high school students.

The U.Va. Summer NANO Academy, scheduled for July 20-24 at the University of Virginia, will offer teachers the opportunity to learn about the creation, measurement, manipulation and use of objects at the nanoscale in a three-credit graduate course.

The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Depart-ment of Education.

Teachers will use the same tools scientists use to manipulate nano-sized objects, including an atomic force microscope and a scanning tunneling microscope.

The program is limited to 12 high school teachers and includes tuition, learning materials, lodging and two meals per day. Middle school teachers will be considered and may apply.
