A Java man was arrested Sunday afternoon after ramming his car into the back of another car several times and firing his revolver into the air, according to Virginia State Police.

Melvin Ray Emerson, 69, was driving a 1985 Cadillac Deville on Spring Garden Road in Blairs when a 2004 BMW four-door sedan passed him, a news release stated.

Emerson struck the BMW from behind with his Cadillac at least three times before the BMW turned into a driveway at a home in the 500 block of Brownsville Heights Lane in Java.

Emerson struck the BMW again as it turned into the driveway, causing it to rotate and strike the front porch. Emerson then got out of his Cadillac and fired one round from a .38 caliber revolver into the air and then ran from the scene at around 1:15 p.m.

Eddie Lee Dixon, 42, of Chatham was driving the BMW and sustained a back injury from the incident. His 6-year-old son also suffered back and head injuries. Both were treated and released from Danville Regional Medical Center.

Dixon’s father, Jerry Dixon, said his son and the 6-year-old were OK after the wreck.

Emerson fled the driveway scene, driving north on Route 640 from Halifax Road. He lost control of his Cadillac on a curve and struck a tree on the left side of the road.

He then caught a ride to his home on Adams Farm Road from a woman passerby.

Police found Emerson hiding in a grove of Leland cypress trees at the back of his home. He was arrested by Deputy Mike Hill of the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Emerson was charged with malicious wounding, three counts of felony hit and run and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The revolver was recovered from the Cadillac crash site.

He is being held at the Pittsylvania County Jail without bond, the release continued. Emerson’s court appearance is scheduled for March 29 at 8:30 a.m. in Pittsylvania County General District Court, according to a news release from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office release stated several people have called about the case. The investigating agency is the Virginia State Police.

Wherever gun control is stricter, or guns are banned, the murder rate is higher.  That is murder RATE, as in number of murders per capita. Not just the number.  Stricter laws only keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens.  Not criminals.

I’m going to ask Mr. Hurt, Mr. Marshall, Mr. Merricks, etc. to immediately draft legislation that will require JP to pull his/her head out of his/her bu!!, to tighten up and see things properly and with clear, concise common sense OR ELSE the full weight of the law will be applied to make Cranial Rectumosis illegal and forbidden. Obviously this will also have the desired effect of preventing everyone else from sticking their heads up their bu!!s and subsequently lower the tragic statistics of stupid bu!!head incidents.
Obviously another overlooked point is that it is the fault of General Motors that Mr. Emerson used one of their products, a loaded Cadillac, to commit this heinous crime, therefore Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Kia and Robert Woodall will need to be sued at the earliest possible moment so that he can explain to the court why a Mazda wasn’t used instead. Then, obviously(I just DON’T understand why people can’t see this OUR way) legislation will need to be immediately passed calling for the licensing and registration of automobiles, trucks, tractors and jon boats, with taxes and stiff fees attached to discourage anyone from getting the idea that they can possess a car whenever they want, especially since, with a one car a month purchase regulation, surely no automobiles or trucks, especially really big truck that have more that 4 wheels, might be illegally smuggled into D.C. or New York and that could result in an unnecessary and plainly avoidable backing accident.
JP-you, and the rest of your left wing bleeding heart liberal imbecile ilk are dumb as a rock and have contributed more to the problems of this country with your well meaning, but seriously misguided agendas, that all of ya need to shut up with that tired, incessant whining.
While we are on the subject, since I am directly decended from Cherokee Tribal Elders, I am serving you notice that you are trespassing on our lands. If you leave now, I won’t have you charged, but if you don’t…...., well we will just have to see.

My dearest JP.  What are you complaining to me for?  You were the one decrying the gun laws of Virginia.  People who don’t like laws in a particular location have several options.  They can run for office so they can try to change the laws.  They can petition their fellow citizens to pressure the current office holders to change the laws.  They can challenge the constitutionality of the current laws in court.  Oh, and btw, they can also move to another jurisdiction where the laws are more tempered to their own political beliefs.  There, does that make you feel better?

And eventhough you offer your own well-worn mantra from the liberal left that “guns” kill people, you know as well as I do the overwhelming majority of your fellow citizens disagree with you.  Fully 80-85% of the American public agrees with the counter mantra “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”.  And don’t ask me to prove that percentage….I just made it up.  lol

Also, you said in your statement that many crimes “...are committed by individuals who can’t be held accountable because of mental problems or rage.“  I would beg to differ with you with respect to “rage”.  I don’t think any sensible person would agree that a person can’t be held accountable because of his rage.  Where in the world did that come from?

Wow Rockit.  The same old stuck record ... If you don’t like something, move.  What a poor, worn out cliche.  Surely you can do better than that.  I’m very disappointed in you.  And, where do you think most of the illegal guns used to commit all the homicides in the nation’s capital come from?  That’s right - the Old Dominion.

In theory the additional prison time for using a gun in a felony is fine; in reality, many crimes, like the one committed by this old gentleman from Java, are committed by individuals who can’t be held accountable because of mental problems or rage.

Whether he was mentally competent when he bought the gun or not, or whether it was his gun or someone else’s gun is a moot point; it still has the same effect if someone is killed by it, which could have very likely been the case here.  The bottom line is, contrary to the NRA’s mantra, GUNS KILL.

Comparing guns to automobiles is just as absurd today as it was years ago when it became the illogical analogy put forth by the NRA after they became not just an organization to teach gun safety (certainly a noble beginning) but a lobbyist for terrorists and murderers (who really needs an UZI or an assault weapon for hunting, unless you are hunting humans?)

My argument is not that “gun laws were violated”; my point is that gun laws are too lenient, especially in Virginia which helps to foster DC as, as you so proudly noted, “the homicide capital of America.“  Thanks to our legislators in Richmond, many people in other states, as well as in Virginia, will die at the end of the barrel of a gun that was sold in Virginia.  Mr. Merricks, Mr. Marshall and our other conservative legislators have blood on their hands through their acts of omission.  Virginians who voted for these “friends of murderers” are likewise guilty.

Peace.

JP, You don’t have to be mentally competent to own or drive a car either.  A point illustrated by this story.  Both can be used to kill another person.  But if you are known to be mentally incompetent, a dealer cannot legally sell you a gun.  A dealer can still sell you a car though.

JP - couple of points here.  First, since you oppose so strongly Virginia’s gun laws, why don’t you move to another area where the laws are as strong as you would like them….an area like for example, Washington DC?  Does the phrase “homicide capital of America” from just a few years ago ring a bell?

Second, and I appreciate this may be a novel idea for you, but how about hold people accountable for their actions?  If you use a gun in the commission of a felony, how about an automatic additional 10 years added to your sentence.  I do believe there is already something like this for federal drug crimes.  Would you agree we mandate such penalties at the state level?

Another thing to consider is this.  Assuming that this guy was a mental case as appears to be the defense line his family and friends are attempting to establish, how do you know he was mental when he got the gun?  How do you know the gun is not really his but his son’s, or brother’s?  Point is, just like we can’t say for sure he is not crazy because all the information is not out there yet, you don’t know for sure that anybody “dropped the ball” in providing this guy a gun.

Now, at the end of the day you may be proven right.  But as it stands right now you don’t know anymore about this guy than the rest of us.  You’re just using this incident to go an an ill-advised anti-gun rant when the truth may be that no gun laws were violated.  As of now, we just don’t know.  And neither do you.

I have been driving BMW’s all my life and I know for a fact unless you got a rocket pack strapped to the back of it a Cadillac can not keep up with any BMW. Hindsite is 20/20 but I belive I would have left this idiot and his Obama Mobile (I mean Chevy) and left him in the dust!

While this may be true, “ In Virginia you don’t even need to be mentally competent to own a gun. “, in order to buy a gun legally from a dealer you must answer some questions in that regard.  Of course you can “LIE” and complete the form incorrectly.

There are enough gun laws.  They need to be enforced.

There is no excuse for this incident!

hymanator.  In Virginia you don’t even need to be mentally competent to own a gun.  The point at issue here is that there needs to be tougher gun laws - but, of course, NEVER in Virginia where the state motto needs to be changed to “. . . from my cold dead hand.“  Peace.
