Goody’s in Danville to remain open
The Goody’s Family Clothing Store in Danville is not one of the 69 stores slated for closing as the company restructures under Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Goody’s announced Monday that a total of 103 stores will close in 2008. The family clothing department store has a total of 355 stores across the U.S.
The only Goody’s store scheduled to close in Virginia is in Lynchburg, company officials said.
Jeremy Stratton, director of Danville’s economic development office, said he is glad to hear that Goody’s is not closing in Danville. He said corporate officials typically close stores that are not performing to expectations.
“Goody’s has a good performance in Danville,” Stratton said.
Earlier this year, another department store chain spared its store in Danville, while closing others. Retail Ventures Inc., which owns Value City, sold 81 percent interest in its discount chain to VCHI Acquisition Co. in January. VCHI announced that it would close about 30 of Value City’s 113 discount stores as part of the acquisition, but none of the Virginia stores would be affected.

Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. opted to purchase 24 stores, and VCHI was to reposition the remaining 50-plus stores as an off-price retailer.
