Goode: GOP victory will ‘send a message’

Former 5th District Rep. Virgil Goode addresses a group of Danville Republicans at Mary’s Diner Tuesday night, encouraging them to reach out to voters before Election Day.

Confident of a party sweep on Nov. 3, about 50 Republicans gathered at Mary’s Diner on Tuesday night for their last official meeting of the year.

With a matter of days left to rally voters, local Republicans called on former 5th District Rep. Virgil Goode to speak alongside Delegates Danny Marshall, R-14th, and Don Merricks, R-16th. Among the comments were more than a few referencing the Democratic “book club” held Monday night to discuss Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell’s graduate school thesis.

“Has anybody got a book here tonight that we can review?” Merricks joked. He described voter apathy as “scary” but said he believed people were beginning to take notice.

Danville GOP chairman Nick Fowler encouraged Republicans to support the GOP ticket Thursday morning at a rally, which will also include Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

Goode, who received a standing ovation from supporters, thanked the volunteers and stressed that what happens in Virginia will send a message nationwide. He encouraged Republicans to reelect Merricks and Marshall along with the statewide ticket. Merricks is running unopposed this year; Democrat Seward Anderson is challenging Marshall.

“What you are doing is going to get us a victory on Nov. 3 and send a message,” Goode said.

“The only reason they are opposing Danny is because in his House of Delegates district, the Democrats carried it in 2008. So they think they can carry it again in 2009. What do you say in 2009, we send them our view that 2008 results were a mistake and elect Danny Marshall?”

Greeted with loud applause, Goode went on to criticize Deeds’ “flip flopping” views on guns and transportation — a factor in Deeds’ “slide in the polls,” he said — and praised McDonnell’s plan for transportation.

Goode also heavily criticized the proposed cap-and-trade legislation, which he said would increase gasoline, home heating and electricity bills, as well as what he called the “Harry Reid bill on socialized medicine — a more socialistic system than any of us can imagine.”

“If we prevail statewide,” Goode said, “…it will be a message to Washington. It’ll be a message to Harry Reid and it’ll be a message to the president and it’ll be a message to Nancy Pelosi. If it’s a wipeout — and I’d like to see that — they might be shaken Wednesday morning.”

Fowler, Goode, Marshall and Merricks — as well as a local party organizer — all stressed the importance of reaching out to voters and getting people to the polls Tuesday.

“I wouldn’t know how to act with a Republican governor,” said Merricks, who has served one term as delegate with Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine in office. “I think it’d be really neat… You talk about seeing something happen, that’s when it’s gonna happen.”

Okay a vote for Deed’s can’t hurt see if he does raises taxes the Northern part or Virginia along with some of the better off folks from the State should not forget the nice scenary that comes along with his vote. These folk’s are benefiting by extra space and road’s and good salaries and want more and will agree for the comfort’s that some some don’t get.Yet Southern and Western Virginia folk’s along with the more better off or forgot their roots or it’s not hurting me people   should look at him as a person who listened and won’t forget you’ll.See him and the rest of the legislator’s might be thankful, yes this is a tight race and he needs your help.Is this about those extra money folks that Mr. Robert has a understanding with from the well off or about a person who really cares about all of what Virginians offer not just   pride or greed but kindness.Craig know’s it you bet Idon’t know him yet he is or willing to be in a better position if he win’s to may be able to get some Job’s going for folk’s of the County atmosphere along with other benefits. Politic’s are hard yet he is fighting, not to mention that this is not about a person who seem’s of popularity, no but a person who has enough Character like some of the folk’s, we have kin too who are smart but have some attribute’s that due to not a handicapp but with a heart of gold ,the world might look at the defencies instead of what they are fighting for and at least with him you can lean on more for he may not desire to get to big headed because power might not be his bag, so lay on it for before you vote see his supporter’s might not see the true Virginian and forget.

SpencerO - What’s the problem now?  You addressed your comments to me.  I responded to those comments.  Are you now suggesting that I shouldn’t respond to comments that were addressed to me?  That sounds like something the Averett Group would come up with.  You know that old saying, “don’t start no mess, won’t be no mess.“  How much education do you need to understand that concept?

Everyone, DON’T forget to VOTE on Tuesday. Vote DEEDS!!!!!!

Rockit, take it easy. You need to stop taking life so seriously. It isn’t worth it. Danville does have a low level of educational attainment . . that is a fact. Maybe you can start helping a few people get their high school diplomas.

SpencerO - I don’t mind you taking up for JP.  Birds of a feather.  Since you were involved in the conversation on the other thread you already know that I only refer to the Averett Group because I know, for some weird reason, such reference offeeeends JP.  Are you telling me now that it offeeeends you as well?  Should that be the case you can pretty much bet that you’ll hear more of it.

As to the education level of people in Danville, that is the reason they can be led around like sheep by the Democratic Party, the Voter’s League, and the Averett Group.  How else could they have been dumb enough to vote for Obama for President?

As to belittling JP, please, cry me a freakin river.  Where were you when JP said the GOP can’t read?  Oh, don’t tell me, that’s okay because one of your libby friends said it, right?  JP has a history of attacks, insults, and character assassinations upon anyone, public or private, with whom he disagrees.  Quite often, when he can’t counter someone else’s argument, he simply dismisses them as being a proponent of Palin, Cheney,  or W., or of, and this is his favorite word, “parrotting” the comments of Beck, Rush, or Hannity.  It has never occurred to JP that just because someone has a different view than him on a given topic, such view is not intended as a challenge to intellectually throw down.  You SpencerO, you are certainly not suggesting that any less standard of discourse be applied to JP.  Or, are you?

JP defends every single thing his current President does as if it is a personal affront to him should one disagree with that President.  He has even accused me of being racist because I spoke out strongly against someone who was arrested for murder in Danville.  Geez, you’d have thought I was accusing JP of murder.  It was totally inappropriate; but, par for the course for JP.  And, I noticed at that time that SpencerO was nowhere to be found.  But here, you act as if JP needs you to take up for him.  Where I come from, only the ones wearing skirts need somebody to come in and fight their battles for them.  What are trying to tell us about JP?

Yeti:  He’s not my President; but, nice try and thank you for playing.

JP:  hahahahahahahaha!!  I knew you were a comedian at heart.

SpencerO, my friend.  Don’t worry about Rockit.  He just likes to read his rants and they, like the GOP, are meaningless - one needs to consider the source.

This group that met last night, the “Chicken Group” (the reason, like Rockit’s, whom I greatly respect, for calling them the “Chicken Group” is because they met at Mary’s Diner and Mary’s Diner serves very good chicken; hence, the “Chicken Group”)is, likewise, meaningless because they have no agenda except to vote for those who vote NO on everything that will move this nation forward after 8 loooong years in the dark ages with GWB.

But that is OK.  History will prove that those who met at the Book Review are the true “patriots” and those who met at the “Chicken Group” were, basically, obstructionists. The GOP has been neutered to the point of being insignificant, and perhaps the same should be considered for some right winged fools who post here, with all due respect.

And, a final point - at least I “at one time could be considered a serious debater and contributor to the political discourse found on this blog.“  Unfortunately, Rockit, the same could not be said about you.  And, at least, Rockit, I did go to college.  You might want to consider a GED, my friend.  It’s not too late.

Meowwwwww…..Peace.

I am trying to figure out which of the movers and shakers in the picture of the audience is Rockit. Ah yes, the future of the GOP looks very bright indeed.

I think it is great that this many people would show, I guess Virgil promised to finish before O’Reilly came on.

Rockit, again I believe you are confusing the TEA Bagged Party(a little different than the ones you attended in your early years) with the group that gathered to discuss the McDonnell thesis(which he presented at the age of 34 years old). It’s okay, we understand. Do you remember who YOUR president is yet?

Rockit, you need to stop belittling those with whom you disagree. You know absolutely nothing about Jackson P’s background. He is very bright, not mentally ill, and as funny as the day is long. And he paid for his own education. The truth about Danville is that a serious number of folks don’t have a high school education, and we won’t even get into how many did not attend or graduate from college. Check the statistics. By the way, please educate yourself about what you read. There is no “Averett group.“ The book club has nothing to do with Averett; if you put your glasses on, your thinking cap and pay attention, you will see that someone from Averett was there. That does not mean that this is an “Averett Group.“

Flag Comment Posted by Rockit on October 28, 2009 at 11:02 am

At least at this meeting there was no attempt to hide the agenda of supporting their candidates.  This is different than the Averett Group because those people (the Averett Group) acted as if they were offering some great revelation in disclosing their dismay at the Republican candidate for Governor.  And, they did this without even mentioning the name of the Democratic nominee.

JP’s post is most appalling of all.  He at one time could be considered a serious debater and contributor to the political discourse found on this blog.  Unfortunately, the blinders offered by the Democratic Party have become so tight, he refuses to even entertain the possibility that someone’s opposing views may contain merit.  When he stoops to the level of name calling and insults….well, that doesn’t say a lot about the opposition.  But it sure does say a lot about JP.  The more he contributes to the discussion, the dumber he sounds.  I just can’t figure out if that’s more of his comedy routine or if he really believes that steady flow of sewage that springs forth from his keyboard.  I suggested before and will suggest again that he should return to his college and demand, I mean absolutely demand a refund of the tuition his parents wasted on him.  That college failed to teach him anything about real people and the real world.  What a shame my son, what a shame.

SpencerO is right.

Merricks joked:  “Has anybody got a book here tonight that we can review?” The question should have been “Has anybody got a book?“  The answer among these under-educated lemmings would have been a resounding cry, in unison, of, “NO!  What’s a book?“

Or he could have continued with “Has anybody got a book here tonight that we can READ?“  The answer would have been a resounding, “NO!  Do you have a copy of ‘My Pet Goat’ which our illustrious leader George W. Bush read to us wonst?  Would you read to us, dear Virge?“  His response would be a resounding, “Why read when we can rent the movie - now let me talk about illegal immigrants.“

All of this was left out of the story. Oh, well it doesn’t matter ... members of the GOP can’t read anyway.  Peace.
