Giffin to run for Danville treasurer
David Giffin, currently an auditor in the Commissioner of the Revenue Office in Danville, has announced his candidacy for city treasurer.
Giffin has been in the commissioner’s office for two years and has a lifetime of experience as an accountant.
He came to Danville in 1978 as part of a corporate team to set up the Brockway Glass plant. Giffin was the plant controller during its start-up.
When the company decided it was time for him to move on to a new project, Giffin said he and his wife, Suzanne, decided they wanted to stay and raise their children in Danville.
Giffin was a controller for several businesses, did private investing and is a previous co-owner of Ruben’s Restaurant. He has since sold his ownership in the restaurant.
As auditor for the commissioner of revenue, Griffin said he has learned about the “workings of city finance,” and is familiar with all the changes that have been made in utility and tax billing.
Giffin said he would like to see the treasurer’s office become more efficient, more customer-friendly and more fiscally responsibly. He also promotes “the integration of the treasurer’s office with the commissioner of revenue and the City Finance Department to make it a more efficient financial operation.”
Giffin and his wife attend Fairview United Methodist Church, where he has been finance chairperson, served on the pastor-staff committee, stewardship committee and worked with the Boy Scouts.
Giffin also has been active with The Good News Jail Ministry, treasurer of the Academic Boosters Club and is a member of the Virginia Association of Local Tax Auditors.
His wife teaches an International Bible Study class and works at the Danville Visitors Center.
To date, he is the only candidate to file the necessary paperwork with the registrar to run for the office of treasurer.
