UPDATE THURSDAY 1/29, 9:16 a.m.:

The Danville Fire Department is looking for what caused the fire and monitoring hot spots.

They say both the Beauty Land and Cash Advance stores have heavy fire damage. The fire was contained to those two businesses.

UPDATE 7:15 a.m.:

Firefighters worked through the early morning working to put out still-burning items that couldn’t be easily accessed after the roof collapsed, said assistant fire chief S.R. Dishman. It took 40 firefighters more than an hour to bring Wednesday night’s blaze under control. Dishman said there are no injuries, and they are waiting for a little more light to start investigating the cause.

Original story:

DANVILLE — Crews were continuing to battle a massive fire in Ballou Park Shopping Center late Wednesday night.

The call came in about 10:30 p.m. of a blaze at the center.

Beauty Land was completely engulfed in flames, and the fire had spread to neighboring Advance America Cash Advance.

Smoke could be seen coming from the roof of other businesses in the shopping center.

While traffic was not blocked on West Main Street, Lt. S. Stevens of the Danville Police Department was asking the public to avoid the area late Wednesday night.

Stevens said at least six officers were at the shopping center.

Explosions were also heard by a photographer when arriving at the fire scene.

Check back for more updates as they become available.

Aye Aye Good Job to the firemen.

Normal Person: They probably will lol

I didn’t know where the fire started when I went by the scene only one word left my mouth Damn and then it hung open for a long time.  So sue me it seemed like a plausible theory to the cause of fire .... WELL..it did ...

Lets give the firefighters a big hand.  They saved a bunch of jobs with the work they did. Just think if CIT had of burned, 250 out of work. These guys and girls are well trained and very professional. Keep up the good work.

now that the building has burned down their interest rates will probably go up even higher…

The fire did not start in the Cash Advance.

If people did not use these loan sharks they would not have a sour taste in their mouth. They know they are not going to be able pay them back when they get the loan. Not at the interest they charge.

I noticed the story says explosions were heard… i was wondering if that could have been from hair spray bottles in the beauty land? those aerosol cans can let out a boom that would scare even the toughest photographers!

I saw the scene today wow It looked like an intense fire, the thought crossed my mind that perhaps someone had set the fire trying to settle a score with Advance America they have been known to leave a sour taste in ones mouth.  Just a thought who knows could of been faulty wiring or a hundred different things I suppose.. But now the shopping center in ballou park is looking rather grim when you take in the site of the abc store that got its front smashed in by an elderly lady who hit the gas instead of the brake.

Flag Comment Posted by Walter on January 29, 2009 at 6:55 pm
