Expansion planned for Danville’s Galileo Magnet School

Three new classrooms, additional bathrooms for students and staff, a larger kitchen, expanded dining room space and a teacher lounge are all being planned for Galileo Magnet High School.
Kathy Osborne, assistant superintendent of administrative services for Danville Public Schools, said the plans do not call for the school’s “footprint” to change — space formerly used by Danville Community College’s Regional Center for Advanced Technology and Training program will be remodeled to give the school the rooms it needs.
“Since RCATT vacated the space (it moved to the Cyber Park), the space has just been used for storage,” Osborne said. “This will offer more students classroom space. We’re moving the kitchen and dining room and will repurpose the space where the kitchen and dining room currently are.”
A learning lab is being considered as a possible use for that space, she said.
The school currently has space for 250 students. With the added classroom, Osborne said Galileo will be able to add between 75 and 100 students to its rolls.
The job is currently out for bid, and Osborne said the school system plans to have the bid opening at the end of April.
Preliminary estimates for the project show it will cost in the neighborhood of $1.2 million, she said.
Until the bids are in, however, a formal proposal cannot be submitted to the School Board, which will need to give final approval to proceed with the project.
“We’re excited,” Osborne said. “We hope it’s ready for early fall.”
