Ethnic intimidation eyed in Caswell shooting

The U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing a Sept. 5 double shooting in Leasburg, N.C., to see if it qualifies as ethnic intimidation.

Deputies found two black children, a 10-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy, who had been shot. They’re injuries were not life threatening.

John Clyde Fuqua, a white 52-year-old from Leasburg, was charged with two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon.

“In North Carolina, generally speaking, ethnic intimidation is a misdemeanor,” said Joel Brewer, district attorney for Caswell and Person counties. “The defendant is charged with two very serious felonies of shooting children. We did advise the U.S. Department of Justice, where ethnic intimidation is treated more seriously than the North Carolina legislature deems to treat it.”

Deputies held Fuqua on a $5,000 secured bond, which he posted.

A judge then increased the bond to $135,000 earlier in the week, and Fuqua was taken back into custody, Brewer said.

Deputies went to Brown Road after receiving two shots-fired 911 calls Sept. 5, according to a Caswell County Sheriff’s Office news release. They found two gunshot victims and a third 10-year-old who was not injured. The victims were treated at the scene, and their injuries were not life threatening.

Isn’t the fact that he shot two kids enough to put this miserable slug away for life? I mean, would it have been less heinous a crime if he had shot two white kids?

It doesn’t matter about the race of the children, HE SHOT TWO CHILDREN for God’s sake! Put him under the jail for shooting two kids!

W.M.,MATTER of fact I do know some of the gruesome details about the shootings that have not been in the newspaper or news and I feel that it should have. Those children are a part of my family. I will not dispose their privacy to how the children are but I will say that, you my friend need to know alll! the details about the kids and everything else before you judge this just being a race issue. I will not comment again on this topic but you really should pray for everyone that was involved in this shooting.

OKAY King… My child would not have been walking down that road alone to begin with! These children’s parents should take more responsibility for there kids! These children were treated at the scene, how serious could the wounds have been? Again you want to turn it into a racial issue. What you really need to do is to get the correct version of the story and not just what you read in the papers. All I have left to say is innocent until proven guilty!!!!!

OKAY KING….These children did not have life threatning wounds and were treated at the scence. They will have no scars later in life unless the parents keep pushing the issue!!! Again, you are making this a racial issue. Maybe you should get your facts straight because all you know is what you are reading in the paper and they are far from being the truth!

Okay, workingmom, what if it were your two children that got shot by a bullet from a black mans gun as he was shooting at a white man and the NAACP worked down town in the black mans county. The NAACP got the shooter a 5 hundred dollar bond,(a slap on the wrist)and said well that’s nothing, they survived and your two kids had to live with these bullet wounds. I know that you would feel the same way these parents feel or any other mother. It’s not just race, but a misdemeanor? that’s like stealing candy from a store, and the law says, well just don’t do it again. WAKE UP!

Let’s see 2 little kids shot by a old nut. What possible defense could he have? Come on lady wake up. He thought they were going to rob him. He thought they were going to kill him. please don’t make yourself look bad by defending this nut. In the dirty south its always about race and sometimes money. Not right but thats just the way it is. It’s a shame too.

It seems to me that this is a one sided story and until both sides have been heard it would be hard to point the blame at one single person. Why does everything always go back to race and money?

This is an attempt on someones life, it did not matter if it was an accident, that he shot the wrong person or not.  Not only was the gun pulled out, but Fuqua pulled the trigger, this was a act of violence and a treat on anyone standing in the way of the bullet. These children are scared for life, they may be healed but they will never forget! All white people are not racist, but that’s probably hard to see through the kids that got in the way of a bullet. I am even surprise he made bond, most of the time especially with a black man or woman, they would be locked up with no bond and it would be a horrible thing that has happened in ANY STATE! Two years ago they locked up three young men in Caswell County and only one was the trigger man that sot and killed a store owner and they didn’t get a five thousand dollar bond, their butts went to jail with no bond or a bond so high that they knew that they wouldn’t see their family or the outside until their court date. Some one tell me what’s the difference? That bullet could have went in the wrong places on those kids and killed them, Thank God it didn’t! but you NC educated judicial system, tell me that’s not an attempt on someones life!!!

Let’s see 2 counts of plain attempted murder and he’s freed for 5g and then remanded for 135g. NC still lives in the 50’s.
