It only took one big “boom!” and about 10 seconds for most of the former Dan River Inc. Dye House to disappear.

The planned implosion went off about 20 minutes late Wednesday morning and had a couple of hitches.

An elevator shaft and stair tower that should have come down with the rest of the building remained standing after the blast, and one of the smokestacks fell the wrong way.

Danville Fire Marshal Shelby Irving had a front-row seat while she did the countdown for the implosion, which was conducted by Vintage Building Products from South Carolina.

“I thought everything went OK,” Irving said after the implosion, though she admitted she thought the elevator shaft was supposed to come down as well.

Irving said one of the smokestacks did not fall as planned, but it didn’t hurt anything.

“It fell toward an old rail trestle,” she said. “It wasn’t tall enough to hit any of the houses on the hill.”

Jerry Rigney, the city’s director of inspections, said the shaft and stair tower have steel I-beams in concrete from the roof to the ground.

“They were made to stand up to just about anything,” Rigney said. “The contractor will have a wrecking-ball crew in the first of the week to take it down.”

The smoke and dust from the implosion dissipated rapidly.

“I didn’t even get dirty,” Irving said. “It cleared out well.”

Rigney said the all-clear was given shortly after the blast, and people who had to leave nearby homes as a safety precaution were able to go home by 11 a.m.

While the implosion was handled by the contractor, many city departments had support roles, Rigney said.

The Human Resources Department arranged for residents in the area to go to the Salvation Army during the event, while the Danville Police Department handled traffic, and the Danville Fire Department, Public Works, Danville Utilities, the Inspections Division and other departments all had a hand in making the morning go smoothly.

“We were there for backup and to protect the citizens,” Rigney said.

Police along Memorial Drive had their hands full preventing people from stopping their cars in the middle of the road to watch, as well as keeping pedestrians from getting too close to the site.

Officers stayed busy near the bridges as well, with irate drivers complaining about detours and people trying to cross police lines to get closer to the blast. Some people even reportedly tried to sneak under the bridge and were moved out by police.

Lt. J.T. Henderson said no injuries were reported.

Danville resident Danny Gammon was among those that gathered downtown to watch the Dye House implosion.

“Textiles and tobacco made Danville,” he said. “My parents, aunt and uncles all worked there. I hate to see them tear it down, but it would take too much money to fix it up.”

Mike Owen said he worked his way through college at the mill, and his family worked at Dan River since the early 1900s.

“It’s a different world now,” he said as the Dye House came down.

The Danville area is always talking about keeping the history around.  So if they want to keep the history going in Danville they need to keep the mill.  It was totaly uncalled for to take the building down, it would have been a different story if it was in the way but it wasn’t!  So now they have the space what are they going to do in the place where the building once stood.  What a beautiful building to blow up….took MANY years to build in it went down in a matter of seconds.  It really upsets me to drive by and see the building gone!

I wonder who will be blamed for the white smoke stack not falling in the right direction and taking out the elevators as it fell?

Any city that allows its history to be destroyed does not deserve to have a history. Who were the lunatic politicians who agreed to have these landmark smokestacks brought down? Danvills is not certainly not a world class organization. With a good city administration, and leadersgip willing to recognize the value of historical landmarks and preserve them, Danville could be a world class organization. But at present, it is no better than some city is a third world banana republic.

letstalk said - “"With my converstions with folks, the building has been gutted. That is why the delay. It was not ready on the 30th so they put it off. It may be a little dust. but not much.“”

Looks like your sources didn’t know anymore about what was going on there than the ones who set off the charges did. No dust cloud huh? Naw…it looked more like a dust bomb! LOL

I feel sorry for anyone who had to breathe that filth! The wrecking crew made a huge blunder, it will likely take months to clean up that mess…too bad, looks expensive. :P

I love Danville too. All of my family is there and I was involved in the community when I lived there. My leaving had nothing to do with Danville hate. What I don’t like, and what I poke fun at, is the greedy and inept leadership that the good citizens of Danville are saddled with. That’s what holds Danville back and allows it’s history to be destroyed. A city that loses it’s history, even if it’s in old buildings that were sweatshops when they were operating, will soon find it’s future gone as well.

Danville’s biggest problem is the negative attitude so many people have. No matter what happens, these crybabies will find something wrong with it. It is easy to find things wrong in any community. That takes little effort. If you would open your eyes a little wider, it takes no more effort to see the good side of Danville. I have never seen a community where people care for and look after each other. Danville has had more than its share of bad luck - but there are a lot of positive things happening. If the negative thinkers were in charge, they would still be talking about how good the past was and have no plans for the future. The county and city decided to work together and develop new industry here. Those efforts are not evident to those with their eyes closed to the future. This star will shine again.

I am SO tired of hearing nasty comments about Danville.  I grew up here and yeah, it’s not as great as it used to be, but it’s still my hometown.  How would you like it if someone came in and sh*t all over your home?

Quit picking on Danville.  If you don’t like it, then MOVE ON SOMEWHERE ELSE!

I was able to watch it online. Thank Goodness. The tv station that covers Danville told the viewers they would carry it live. That didn’t happen. Glad the city channel carried it online. Glad to see it go. Now comes the clean up. Wonder if the mexican woman will be back on tv talking about her house?

LOL LOL…this should make the History Channel’s Engineering Disasters. “We did a great job there Billy Bob…cept the smokestack fell the wrong way and the elevator shafts are still standing….“...as Homer Simpson said “Doh!“...hmmm..maybe that can be Danville’s new motto…“Danville….Doh!!“
