Danville Voters League endorses candidates
The Danville Voters’ League, a voter advocacy group established in the 1930s for blacks, recently announced its Democratic endorsements for next week’s statewide election.
The group, led by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth, endorsed the Democratic ticket of Creigh Deeds for governor, Jody Wagner for lieutenant governor, Steve Shannon for attorney general and Seward Anderson for 14th District delegate. Locally, the Voters’ League also endorsed James Martin for commonwealth’s attorney and T.L. Childress for Danville City Sheriff.
“Our concern is that we are gonna be taken care of locally and we believe these individuals will be a voice for us,” Bridgeforth said.
Bridgeforth said the Voters’ League typically endorses Democrats and that they were assessing the candidates based on what kinds of positive changes they could make. He said they believed the statewide Democrats were the best candidates to bring jobs to Southside.
“There’s always room for fresh ideas,” Bridgeforth said of Anderson, “and sometimes when you look at something from the outside, you can see things that can be made different and made better.”
The Voters’ League met with the local candidates in September, and Bridgeforth said they spent longer deciding who to endorse for the commonwealth’s attorney and sheriff races than the statewide races. He said they chose Martin because of his case-by-case views on the open file policy, rather than completely open or closed.
They endorsed Childress for Danville Sheriff because of his experience with the Danville Sheriff’s Office and felt that he understood “the responsibility of the inmates so they are treated fairly and treated right.”
“Our slogan is ‘we are a political force that makes a difference,’” Bridgeforth said. “We are in a position that we can sway votes either way…
“I’m really appalled at the Republican Party at how they’re resisting the change… We are hoping that we’ll maintain the course so that we can see a change. And the Democrats have to come out as they did last year.”
Reader Reactions
Well, well, well, it’s the day after. Some help this democratic party organization was to state and local candidates. Serves them right. Maybe next time, they’ll be open minded instead of blindly following the lead of the guy they lovingly refer to as President. Of course, he’s not my President.
JP, you are the one who needs to pay attention and read more carefully. It is YOU not me who has selected Jackson Pollock as a hero. To suggest he was any kind of artist at all is a joke. His “art” consisted of flinging different colors of paint onto a canvas. Then you brought up Williams & Capote as YOUR favorites. They are not MY favorites, nor is Mapplethorpe, although he fits the profile of the kind of “artist” you enjoy.
Finally, I had to laugh out loud when you state, “I am done here”. Everybody here knows you cannot stay away from this forum, you love to read the venom you spew here too much. You can no more quit this blog Obama can quit talking about himself. No JP, you are not done here, so quit lying about it, but you should quit using all those alternate names you have.
Somebody stop the pompous windbag already. I can’t wait to see who thinks I’m talking about them.
Finally, JP stands by his comments. Had he done that initially, that would have saved everybody the heartache of having to spell out his illogical rhetoric for him. But, as they say, better late than never. I’m glad he now appreciates the error of his ways.
This line of conversation reminds me of the argument from the science teacher who swears up and down that the color of a cloudless sky is not blue. That blue is just a reflection, or a misreading of the color prism, or some scientific extrapolation of some sort. But, to everybody except the science teacher, the color of a cloudless sky is blue. If looking at things like that is illogical, then I am of course guilty as charged.
Rockit. I stand by my comments. Again, I strongly suggest that you take a primary course in reading and perhaps a course in logic. My comments speak for themselves without your inaccurate interpretation. I’m done here.
Peace to you, my friend.
Hahahahahaha!
Oh look, it’s Miles again! Run for your life everybody!
Miles, stop playing blog tag, you’re abusing your privileges that I allow you.
He’s not my President!
“I hate debating JP. It takes no more intelligence than that required for a third grade spelling test.“ Rockit
Well in that case you are eminently qualified.
I hate debating JP. It takes no more intelligence than that required for a third grade spelling test. That of course might be a little strong for JP but I’m doing my best here to slow down to his speed.
Here goes. To quote JP, he wrote on Nov 1 at 10:42 am:
“...the Chicken Group that met at Mary’s Diner last week will endorse the Republican candidate for governor, no matter who that candidate may be (even Jim Gilmore whose years as governor in this state were catastrophic - even Mussolini, if he were living, because he was afterall a “fiscal conservative”)...“
That’s it. That’s what JP said. I’m absolutely stunned that he now criticizes someone for drawing the conclusion that he is claiming, based on his comments, that an indorsement by the Chicken Group of Jim Gilmore would be comparative to an indorsement for Mussolini. With a straight face (but apparently with his fingers crossed behind his back), he now claims that he was not comparing Gilmore to Mussolini. Instead, he offers up a head-fake by suggesting that when I do the exact same thing that he did but compare Barrack Hussein Obama with Adolph Hitler, that that is suddenly not fair.
I guess the lesson here from JP is a typical Liberal mantra——when you’re caught in an embarrassing situation, do what Slick Willy did, Lie! JP made a comparison between a former governor of Virginia and one of the perpetrators of World War II. He sees nothing wrong with that comparison. And, he has every right to make that comparison. Free speech and all that good stuff. But, for crying out loud, own what you say. If you won’t even stand by your comments (that you freely wrote…I mean, nobody made you write them), how are we to trust the integrity of any of your future musings?
I have thought for a long time that most of JP’s comments were just to try to pick a fight for the fun of it. I mean, let’s face it, no reasonable or real person could hold some of the irrational, far left, race-bating views that he routinely brings to this discussion. I’m now convinced more than ever that he’s not a worthy opponent at all. Just a simple minded columnist wannabe who doesn’t understand the meaning of the term integrity. Such a shame. Such a shame indeed.
Rockit. You are comparing two events happening by two entitities in a historical context, thus, you are comparing President Obama to Adolph Hitler; however, I did not compare the events that happened under Gilmore (he didn’t have the trains to run on time) with what happened under Mussolini (he did have the trains to run on time). Therefore, there is no logical means for comparison in my scenario, whereas, there is a definite means of comparison under your scenario. Have you considered taking a course in logic? There are a number of such courses offered by colleges and universities in the surrounding area. Check into that, Rockit. Otherwise, you are beginning to sound more and more like Fox News (MOTTO: “If it’s not true, what difference does ti make? We can still get the public to believe lies.“).
Peace to you, my simple friend.
Ok so JP, were I to point out to you the recent controversy of your President dissing Fox News and acting like they were some kind of anti-guvment entity and not worthy of being treated as “real” media——and then right behind that I was to tell you that that is exactly what Adolph Hitler did in 1933 as a prelude to later firebombing those newspapers who did not bow down to his party line. After you take a breath, are you going to honestly say that I’m not comparing Obama with Hitler?
And, remember, you said you weren’t comparing Gilmore and Mussolini.
The obvious answer to the above hypothetical is that by any reasonable person’s logic, of course I’m comparing Hitler with Obama. (Not necessarily an unfair comparison by the way). However, if we follow JP’s logic, that which is obviously true becomes untrue. Accordingly, by the rules JP wants to play by, since he insists that he was not comparing Gilmore with Mussolini, under that criteria, nobody can make the “ridiculous” claim that I just compared Obama to Hitler.
JP just gets weirder and weirder and weirder!
But remember, he’s not my President so what do I care.
