Danville Commonwealth’s Attorney hopefuls hold debate

Candidates for Danville Commonwealth’s Attorney talked about how they could improve Danville and why they are the better than their opponents during a debate Thursday afternoon.

The Ministerial Alliance of Danville and Vicinity hosted the forum at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Jim Martin, Claudette Robertson and Michael Newman attended.

Martin said he would establish a drug court, which would give certain offenders treatment instead of incarceration. He also said he would talk with legislators about changing grand jury laws. Grand juries are not required when a preliminary hearing is held. Usually during those hearings, the judge will either certify the case to circuit court or dismiss it.

Robertson said the office needs to make changes to better Danville. Those changes include open file dis-covery, a practice that allows defense attorneys to see their client’s entire file. She said witnesses’ identity and safety can be protected by redacting personal information or withholding certain documents.

She also said that she would streamline the grand jury process and allow a police officer to present other officers’ minor cases to the grand jury. Investigators would still be required to testify, as would officers involved in violent offenses. Robertson said making the grand jury process more efficient for police would save the city money spent on overtime and keep more police officers on the street.

Newman said the office would continue to prosecute and convict violent offenders.

“It’s not about running a law firm,” he said, adding that the commonwealth’s attorney has to be proactive and focus on victims.

Martin said he is the most qualified of the three candidates, citing his 18 years of experience as a prosecutor. He added that he has experience as a defense attorney and running a law firm as well. He opened Martin & Martin Law Firm in 2007.

Robertson said that the commonwealth’s attorney is the president of the law firm.

“Trial experience is a must, but it’s not the only skill you need to have to succeed,” she said.

The election also is about personality, she added.

“It’s about what kind of person you want to lead the city of Danville in the commonwealth’s attorney office through the next 20, 30 or 40 years,” Robertson said.

Newman said he has the most trial experience of any of his opponents.

“I have actually been in the courtroom,” he said.

Newman added that he would be proactive to prevent violent crimes as well as prosecute them.

The candidates took written questions from the audience toward the end of the forum. One of the questions asked whom each candidate would vote for if he or she wasn’t running.

Newman and Robertson said they would vote for Martin, who dodged the question by saying he would write in Robert Adams Jr. Adams is a senior assistant commonwealth’s attorney for Danville. He is not running.

marpiedan maybe you should just admit that Mr. Newman respects Jim Martin enough to admit he would vote for him.  The question was obviously meant to corner the candidates into stating who they would vote for if they were not running.  I think you are upset that both Mr. Newman and Ms. Robertson were not able to think on their feet, which is ESSENTIAL for any lawyer in the courtroom.

dispatcher, I know Martin supporters who have had their Martin signs replaced with Newman signs.

I have known Mike Newman and his family since he was a toddler.  They are all good people.  His twin brother teaches in the county.  Mike’s people have had supporters call and ask for another sign because someone took theirs.  Mike is very sorry about what he said and said he knew as soon as he said it, it was wrong.  He has taken a lot of criticism from the other two candidates and it is unjustified.  Mike is a life long citizen of Danville, product of the Danville city schools and is a fine, upstanding, honest and hardworking man.  I only wish I lived in the city so I could vote for him.

hey, concernedcitizen,

Please go to channel 47 News (www.danvillecitynews.com) and see a video of the question and your candidates answer. (Mr. Martin)

Then look up your definitions again in your new “FUNK & WAGNALLS” (dictionary).

“If it walks like a DUCK, and it talks like a DUCK….... then it must be DUCKING like a real politician”!!!!

Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday!!!

Congratulations Mr. Newman.  You have hindered your chance at winning.  I new your cockiness would lead to your downfall, and I guess Danville now knows too!!  Go Mr. Martin!!!

Fireman, I heard the same thing.  When Mr. Newman says that it takes more than a “cute picture on a truck” to be the Commonwealth’s Attorney that tells the public, the majority of them women, exactly how Mr. Newman feels about women.

I would certainly NOT vote for him!!!

Funny thing! Mr.Newman says he has prosecuted more cases than his opponents COMBINED! But yesterday, when asked how many cases he has tried in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office he “had no idea. Thousands probably”. DO THE MATH!! R? + M? /=/ ??NZ??. DOESN’T ADD UP, DOES IT?

A little truth and honesty in advertising is due here!!!!

Well, I hate to say it, but from what I have heard today, I feel that Newman has broke a few bridges and a great deal of it has to do with the female voters.

According to my spouse, Mr. Newman made a very sexist comment about Ms. Robertson. I was not there and I don’t know but it is all I have heard about.

Newman had her vote to begin with but he kissed that goodbye today.

I went to this entire debate and was not completely sure who to vote for before hand but now I am 100% sure.  I will be voting for Jim Martin.  Martin by far surpassed his opponents in this debate, especially Michael Newman.
Also, this article states that Martin “dodged” the question.  If you read the articles text, it says “One of the questions asked whom each candidate would vote for if he or she wasn’t running.“  Martin answered truthfully and if answering the question truthfully and completely is dodging, then I need to buy myself a new dictionary.
