City’s first CROP walk raises money to benefit God’s Storehouse

CROP Walk organizers weren’t disappointed Saturday by the number of people who showed up to fight hunger.

Hundreds of people signed up to participate at West Main Baptist Church for the first CROP Walk held in Danville, said Beth Bauman, the event’s organizer.

And it didn’t hurt that the sky was blue and the sun was out.

“I’m impressed about the weather,” Bauman said,

Walkers from at least 13 local churches and 10 civic organizations took part. Once the proceeds are added up, God’s Storehouse, a local food bank, will get a fourth of the funds and the rest will go to fight world hunger.

The Rev. John Losee, pastor of Unity Presbyterian Church, huddled with about 10 church members who took part before the walk got underway. Losee said taking part in the walk was not tough for him since there are hungry people around the world and in Danville.

“Because there are people who need it,” Losee said.

Unity Presbyterian raised about $650-$750 for the CROP Walk.

Jennie Otersen took part because the money goes to a cause. She likes the idea because a portion of the funds stays in Danville and the rest goes to an organization that knows how to alleviate hunger around he world.

“It’s a great cause,” Otersen said.

Averett University student Chrysa Meaney was glad to spend a part of her morning taking part in the walk. She said the Christian Student Union got the world out on campus that they were needed.

“This is definitely a good cause,” she said.
