Angela Harris developed a love of writing at an early age. She liked to write short stories, poetry and develop her skills with a journal.

On Saturday, Harris will have a signing for her first book from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bronx Boy Bagels, 316 Main St.

“Night Light” is a story about a little girl named Ruth Ann and what it takes to get her to go to bed.

The child plays games such as hide and seek with her mother to postpone the inevitable. She takes inventory of her toys, she does bunny hops and counts stars.

Does Ruth Ann’s mother finally get her to go to bed? Well …you will have to read the story to find the answer to that question.

While Harris’ love of writing never went away, it was placed on the back burner for a while. Harris said a conversation with an old friend at Danville Community College rekindled her passion for writing.

Encouragement from Ted Maier, an associate professor of English, and a creative writing class at DCC led Harris to publishing “Night Light.”

She refers to her first publishing effort as her “baby elephant” because she says it took her about two years to get it in printed form. When asked why it took so long, Harris reveals that her main obstacle was finding an illustrator for the project.

“And he (the illustrator) was in my back door all along,” Harris said. “I didn’t know he could draw and he didn’t know I could write.”

Harris received an associate of applied science degree in Business Management from Danville Community College. She is pursuing a bachelpr’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Richmond. Married and the mother of two children, Harris is employed in the health care field as a patient account representative.
