Chatham fires town manager
Chatham Town Council fired Town Manager Mike Jones this week, because the part-time manager “just wasn’t working out,” according to Chatham Mayor George Haley.
Haley said the Town Council “de-funded” the temporary, part-time position, and plans to restructure how the town is managed in the coming months. He said Jones hadn’t done anything in particular wrong, but that a part-time manager might not be what the town needs.
“In my opinion, they may be looking at a permanent, full-time city manager,” Haley said. “Up the road, anyone can apply for the job, including Mike.”
Haley said the 1,338 residents of Chatham don’t pay an excessive amount of taxes, so “we don’t have a lot of money,” but said a full-time town manager may be needed to bring about the changes the Town Council would like to see in the town.
“We are moving forward, and working to improve the looks of our town,” Haley said.

According to the article in the Star Tribune, council voted 5-0 ( one counil member was absent). The Mayor doesnt even vote unless there is a tie. Looks like council made their choice who are influenced by the residents of Chatham.
Just one more power play by George Haley. He got booted off the Board of Supervisors so now he has his little kingdom in the town of Chatham. Maybe the town council should just make George the town Czar. I am sure he would like that title.
Having trouble completing sentences again? It makes no “never-mind”? Huh? Try reading your post before submitting.
It really makes no never-mind to me what the structure is of either city… One wants to be growth-related amd the other one—well, you know… What does the sign say when entering Chatham, “Welcome to ?“...
Isn’t it rude and childish to say “duh” when making a silly statement yourself? Chatham is a town, not a city, and thus will never have a “city manager.“ As for having a town manager, it appears that even without a full-time town manager, Chatham has fewer problems than Danville, with its City Manager. And if Danville’s decline continues, it may soon be looking for a town manager itself. It happened in South Boston, where the city gave up its charter, became a town again, and dumped all its problems on Halifax County.
Isn’t that odd; no City Manager in the County Seat??? And the City Council has no insight to bring about changes??? Sounds as if the Council needs to restructure and hire a Seer!!! Duh, c’mon Council, put your heads together for growth and development!!!
