A Charlotte County man is in serious condition after he tried to stop his car from rolling downhill, Danville police said Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the incident on South Boston Road at about 10:37 a.m. Thursday.

Police said Larry Carson, 66, of Saxe, had parked his 1994 Chevrolet Suburban at 1014 South Boston Road.

Carson and his wife were out of the vehicle when it started rolling backwards, police said, and Carson attempted to stop the vehicle.

Police said Carson was apparently knocked down and injured in the process, and the vehicle kept rolling until it stopped in a ditch, in front of Rocket Rogers Old 97 Choppers, at 1010 South Boston Road.

Carson’s wife was not injured in the accident, police said.

Carson was initially taken to Danville Regional Medical Center, but was flown via helicopter to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where his injuries were classified as serious, police said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said.
