Celebrate Independence Day in Danville

From competing in an apple pie contest to rallying for lower taxes, local residents have the opportunity to celebrate American independence in a variety of ways on Saturday.

The Community Market will be open as usual starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, with some of the Danville Braves on hand to sign autographs from 10 to 11 before their game at 6 p.m. against the Princeton Rays.

There will be free hot dogs at the farmer’s market and an apple pie contest, along with bottle rocket activities at the Danville Science Center.

Carrington Pavilion will open at 5 p.m. with free crafts and rides for kids, with entertainment beginning at 6:30. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, will kick off the evening with vice mayor T. Wayne Oakes before local singer Terry Agnor performs. The Danville Symphony Orchestra will also perform.

“Danville’s kind of Americana at its best,” said Heather Vipperman, assistant director of tourism, “so when you celebrate the Fourth here, you really see what it’s like to be an American and the appreciation of what people did to build our country.”

From 6 to 9 p.m. is the Main Street Cruise In, and the fireworks extravaganza begins at dark. Sparklers are not permitted.

“They always bring a fantastic show,” Vipperman said of Zambelli Fireworks, the company that has set off Danville’s fireworks for the last several years. The fireworks will be set off over the Dan River and will last about 30 minutes.

Also happening July 4 is a Tea Party Tax Day in Ballou Park at noon, hosted by the Tea Party Patriots. Del. Danny Marshall, R-14th District, will speak. For more information on the tax rally, visit teapartypatriots.org.

Tomorrow we not only celebrate the birth of THE greatest nation on earth, but also the colaboration of great minds and hearts who put together THE GREATEST document on earth. All in effort to lead and direct mankind in the direction of FREEDOM. May the same spirit that moved our four fathers touch the souls of all American citizens. Well Ravenscottage, the top marginal tax rate in the 50’s was approximately 90% (I can get the exact number for you if it matters) and the middle class flourished. Compare that with the tanking of the middle class under Shrub Jr’s 37% top marginal rate, and it becomes pretty clear to all but those who wear blinders: A 90-ish percent top marginal rate would be fine.

Two things are readily apparent from your posts. Either you are quite wealthy and oppose tax increases for purely selfish reasons, or you’re a middle class person who would actually benefit from Obama’s tax structure and don’t know it because Rush Limpball or Faux News neglected to tell you. I suspect the latter. Go on, continue to carry water for for rich Republicans to your own detriment. Or do you enjoy paying more of your hard-earned money while those at the top get a free ride?

Tell us all then what percentage of your income would you like to have forcibly confiscated by the government and redistributed to the rest of us…50%...60%...75% or maybe 90%? How about 100%? This weekend I suggest you read or reread the Declaration of Independence and remember that this glorious document was written by very wealthy men who risked it all for freedom.  So sorry you are consumed with wealth envy but “the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.“

Ouch! Owww! I’m seeing a bright white light at the end of a long tunnel! In the most stinging rebuke in the history of mankind, Ravenscottage indirectly called me a Liberal! Oh, the pain! Oh the humanity!

Just for the record, I am a proud Liberal, and freely admit it to anyone who asks. So if you were hoping to insult me by calling me that name, sorry, no dice. That would be like me calling you a conservative and expecting you to be insulted.

And to be honest, given your total inability to contradict anything I said with something that goes beyond name calling and quoting the title of a Michael Savage book, I was ready to put some blame on the Danville school system myself…until I realized the schools need SOMETHING to work with. The schools get a pass this time.

RandyDowdy, the fireworks typically start 9:30-9:45-ish, if past years are any indication.

Does anyone know what time the fireworks will start?  At dark is awful vague, lol.  My kids will go crazy waiting.

Samacres…I do so hope you are new to this area because I would hate to think that our area schools had failed you so miserably. One thing for sure is that you have removed all doubt that liberalism is indeed a mental disorder.

That so-called “fair tax” is one of those things that sounds so fantastic, until you stop and actually THINK about what it would actually do. A 22-25% sales tax on everything would destroy the middle class. It’s definitely a rich man’s pipe-dream.
