Celebrate Independence Day in Danville
From competing in an apple pie contest to rallying for lower taxes, local residents have the opportunity to celebrate American independence in a variety of ways on Saturday.
The Community Market will be open as usual starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, with some of the Danville Braves on hand to sign autographs from 10 to 11 before their game at 6 p.m. against the Princeton Rays.
There will be free hot dogs at the farmer’s market and an apple pie contest, along with bottle rocket activities at the Danville Science Center.
Carrington Pavilion will open at 5 p.m. with free crafts and rides for kids, with entertainment beginning at 6:30. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, will kick off the evening with vice mayor T. Wayne Oakes before local singer Terry Agnor performs. The Danville Symphony Orchestra will also perform.
“Danville’s kind of Americana at its best,” said Heather Vipperman, assistant director of tourism, “so when you celebrate the Fourth here, you really see what it’s like to be an American and the appreciation of what people did to build our country.”
From 6 to 9 p.m. is the Main Street Cruise In, and the fireworks extravaganza begins at dark. Sparklers are not permitted.
“They always bring a fantastic show,” Vipperman said of Zambelli Fireworks, the company that has set off Danville’s fireworks for the last several years. The fireworks will be set off over the Dan River and will last about 30 minutes.
Also happening July 4 is a Tea Party Tax Day in Ballou Park at noon, hosted by the Tea Party Patriots. Del. Danny Marshall, R-14th District, will speak. For more information on the tax rally, visit teapartypatriots.org.

Ahhhh, Diesel and Rockit, kudos!! You Rule!!
AHHHHHHHsamacres; can you know-can you possibly know how refreshing your posts are? Can you know how rare? thank you!
That’s why Fair Tax will never happen. It makes too much sense.
There is always a downside though.
Do you trust your “elected” ,or as I call most of them entitled, officials to stop at 23%?
Will the MegaLowMarts of the country use their tax collecting duties as political leverage, or worse?
Will this be the first tax in a fresh start of new taxes?
I’m not sure if I’m ready for Ronald McDonald to be Chief of Staff. To quote a really bad movie “He who controls the money has the power!“

Bravo!! Your post hit the nail right on the head. The simplicity of the Fair Tax and its equal application to all (thus, it’s title Fair Tax) makes more sense than it’s opponents want to admit. After the poster calling herself samsacres says that 90% tax rate sounds about right to her, how can anyone take that kind of nonsense seriously. That’s so stupid, I’m convinced she doesn’t really mean it, she’s just trying to get a rise out of everybody.
This is the fair tax in a nutshell. All federal taxes are abolished. No more income tax, no more social security tax, no more inheritance tax, no more capital gains tax, etc., etc. If in some way, fashion or form, you pay tax to the federal government, that tax is eliminated under the fair tax. So with everybody paying zero taxes, that is fair to everybody. We’re all paying the same - zero. To fund the necessary functions of the federal government, and fully fund the government commitments such as social security and medicare, a sales tax of 23% is placed on all consumer items. This 23% covers everything and is paid by everyone. This is fair because, again everybody is paying the same thing, 23%. Now, what the liberals and socialist like samsacres object to is just that, everybody is treated the same - equal taxation regardless of your wealth, equal taxation regardless of you education, equal taxation regardless of your station in life. The only way to prevent paying the tax is to not buy an item. Or, in the spirit of frugality, buy only two items versus three. But, that’s the beauty of it, it comes down to individual decisions, individual choices. And that individuality is what we celebrate on July 4th.
The revenue generated by this 23% tax again replaces all current federal taxes and fully funds government operations and fully funds the social security trust and other entitlement programs. The only thing I disagree with is the provision allowing a prebate. This prebate is a check mailed to every single taxpayer in America, once a month. It is supposed to cover any taxes paid on essential items like food, medicine, daycare, etc. The reason I believe a prebate is a mistake is because it will become a political hot potato. I can just see the campaign ads “vote for me and I’ll raise your prebate.“ Besides, get rid of the prebate and maybe we can cut the tax to 20%.
In short, there’s just no down side to having the fair tax. Of course, those who don’t pay any taxes now will oppose it. We already see that one coming. But maybe it’s time in this country for the benefit of the whole country to outweigh the crys of those who have little to offer.
thanks for the fireworks info, randydowdy.
Some fireworks were shot on the 3rd at Dan Dnaiels park. More are set to go on the 4th, Saturday night.
Does anyone know why the fireworks extravaganza was shot on the 3rd of July, instead of the 4th like common sense would suggest?
It has been demonstrated that wealth envy occurs in the same part of the brain as does penis envy.
I dont know how this post turned into this, but I must say something here:
Why are the fortunate and the people that have to work hard to make money penalized for the ones who do not.
Do you have wealth envy? Wealth envy is when you ride down the road and look at a huge house with nice cars and you say “they shouldn’t have all that. That’s way too much. Why cant I have that?“ If your not making enough money weather you are black or white, it’s your fault..no one elses. The poor should contribute just as much as the rich, period!! The Fair tax would solve that problem….period!!
Tea Party ? I started reading what I thought was an information piece inviting citizens to July 4th activities. What does that have to do with a Tea Party? There are enough opportunities throughout the year to press that issue. If people want to conduct veiled political rallies year-round that’s their option. Getting caught up in national political debates is our right, but considering the unemployment rate in Danville there may be more benefit in promoting job creation locally. This state is known nationally and globally to be business friendly. I submit for your consideration that there are productive means of socio-economic development that properly administered could benefit rich and poor alike. There are excellent educational and business activities prepared to grow in Danville as long as citizenship does not degenerate into nasty partisan politics. Parroting the talking points of the heritage foundation and riding that cultural wave along with the rest of that crowd has been rejected by the majority of Americans. Despite what national show business personalities promote, we celebrate the July 4th holiday for all Americans. Not just “Real Americans” or “Great Americans”, but “ALL AMERCANS”!
