Nine horses were killed in a Hurt barn fire Saturday afternoon, Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal Steve Bowman said.

The fire at 400 Prospect Road in Hurt was reported just after 1 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, a barn at the rear of the property was “heavily involved” with fire, Bowman said.

“One horse was rescued by someone, I don’t know if it was a neighbor or people that saw the fire,” Bowman said.

The fire still is under investigation.

If there was nothing electrical there, it is very suspicious.  With all the rain, and the high humidity, there is virtually no chance of spontaneous combustion of hay or other flammable objects.  I hope it wasn’t arson.  If it was, at least they coulda let the darn animals out first. ;(
