Attempted car theft foiled in Danville

An off-duty Danville police officer is being credited with thwarting a possible car theft Saturday morning on Westover Drive.

Cpl. Timothy Scearce was driving up Westover Drive when he noticed three men in a rollback tow truck drive behind the home of an acquaintance, according to a news release from the police department.

Scearce called the homeowner and discovered the men did not have permission to be on the property, the news release states.

Scearce then called the police department and the responding officers “confirmed that the three men were attempting to steal a vehicle,” Lt. Mike Mondul said in the release.

Steven Ray Hankins, 45, of Danville, has been charged with attempted grand larceny and tres-passing. The other two men have not been charged.

Police said the men planned to scrap the vehicle for money at a facility near Danville.

I get sooooo Tired of people blaming the police for doing their job—I bet if any of these people needed help they would be sooo grateful to the police for being overly cautious—
If you have ever had something stolen or been robbed—you would appreciate overly cautious or “extreme” police officers… And if they were not stealing and indeed had permission to pick up the “junked car” then why would the owner have said they did not have permission?
I will side with caution when it comes to my property anytime—

Anyone know his number? Because I have some junk cars he can haul off and make the neighborhood look better. Barney Fife and the Danville Register & Bee need to get their facts straight.  He did have permission from the owner of the vehicle and he was not charged with grand larceny.  If the police would put their time and energy into protecting the community from all the robberies instead of worrying about someone hauling off a junk car, people might not be so afraid to go out at night.
