The left southbound lane of U.S. 29 remains closed because of an accident involving two tractor-trailer trucks.

The first tractor-trailer, from Phoenix, Ariz.-based Swift Leasing, ran off the right side of the highway, hit an embankment and overturned onto the roadway, said Sgt. Robert Carpentieri, spokesman with the Virginia State Police. Another tractor trailer, from ABF Freight Systems, Inc., out of Oklahoma City, Okla., struck the overturned vehicle.

The second truck’s driver, Robert J. Reichert, 72, of Ickeburg, Pa., was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with unknown injuries, Carpentieri said.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday just north of Route 643, Carpentieri said.

The driver of the first truck, Jeff M. Carbone, 41, of Red Oak, was charged with reckless driving. He was not injured.

One lane of traffic remained shut down at 3:05 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Web site.
