Man arrested in injuring of Gretna deputy
Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Pittsville man Sunday in connection with an incident Saturday morning involving the injury of an on-duty deputy.
Deputies arrested Jeremy Dewayne Berger, 28, of Court Road in Pittsville, on a charge of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer in relation to the incident in Gretna, according to a news release. Berger is being held without bond.
An on-duty deputy was injured while serving a malicious wounding warrant on the 800 block of Henry Road in Gretna at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, said Lt. Col. Ronnie Simpson, of the sheriff’s office.
Simpson said the suspect got into a blue Toyota Corolla and tried to drive away, striking the deputy while he got away. Shots were reportedly fired during the altercation.
The deputy, whose name has not been released, was treated at Danville Regional Medical Center and released Saturday.
An on-duty sergeant in the sheriff’s office could not provide any more details Sunday on Berger’s arrest or the incident. He said the Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investiga-tions was investigating “everything else” other than the arrest.
Sgt. Robert Carpentieri, a public information officer for the state police, said the sheriff’s office had not provided him any of the details surrounding the incident.
“Our department called in (the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office) to investigate the incident,” Carpentieri said. “They usually do that so it’s a nonbiased investigation. But no details have been provided to me.”
Carpentieri confirmed that the state police was handling the shooting but that the sheriff’s office was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. He said the sheriff’s office could provide more information today.

Pitt Co Sheriff’s Office, great job!!
Go get em boys!!
CLB - Are you trying to act “presidential”? The person that tried to run over the deputy must be a friend of yours.
I guess you think the deputy should thank the person for trying to run him over.
The majority of Law enforcement folks, as well as other other emergency services personnel, are honest and are trying to protect the public, regardless of race, gender, lifestyle, etc. I am thankful for them and pray for them. You always have a few bad apples in everything.
How would you have handled someone trying to run you over?
CLB - Where did that come from? Deputy goes to serve a warrant. Suspect resists by driving away in car. Car suspect’s driving hits and injures deputy. This action takes place while fleeing an attempted arrest for violation of a felony. By law, if the act by the suspect was intentional, that makes it attempted capital murder. Who was acting stupidly?
More cops acting stupidly.
