GOP’s Wilson faces rebuke today from House Dems
Published: September 15, 2009
WASHINGTON—Barring a last-minute apology to Congress, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina faces what is likely to be a partisan vote scolding him for shouting “You lie!“ at President Barack Obama.
Democratic aides said House leaders were preparing to introduce a resolution of disapproval this afternoon, with a vote likely later in the day.
Democrats confirmed last night that they were moving forward with the rebuke.
Wilson has apologized to the White House for his outburst last week during Obama’s speech to Congress. But Democrats say Wilson also should apologize to Congress for what they call an unprecedented breach of decorum.
Wilson has refused to do so, saying his initial apology was sufficient.
Reader Reactions
Wilson has already apologized to President Obama and President Obama has accepted. That should be the end of it. The Congress has more pressing concerns to worry about.
A lot of people want to act as if it is only Republican politicians that ever do any thing wrong or embarassing. But that door swings both ways as shown by the likes of Elliot Spitzer, Rod Blogojevich, Roland Burris, Ted Kennedy, Charlie Rangle, William Jefferson, James Trafficante, Jack Murtha, John Edwards, Barney Frank, Christopher Dodd, etc., etc., etc. If we get involved in having resolutions of censure everytime a politician does something unseemly (not to mention the times these guys have done something illegal), there will be no time left for anything else. Of course, maybe that’s a good thing seeing how it would mean they had less time to screw up everything.
Maybe not the correct place or time, but Congressman Joe Wilson did not say anything that over half of the population of this coutry wouldn’t like to say to President Obama!!
Members of Congress can, and should, simply behave better than Wilson, as they are role models for our children and are being watched by the entire world. Integrity and civility are sorely lacking since the Republicans’ big loss in the last election, and the next thing I expect to hear them say is, “I’m not a role model,“ just as the pro athletes say when scolded about their assault, rape, and weapons charges. Wilson rates right down there with the governors of New York and South Carolina and with Dick Cheney, who gave a congressional opponent the middle finger (obscene) gesture on the floor of the Senate during his administration. A rebuke for Wilson is pretty meaningless—the damage with the public is already done, and his party continues to dig themselves deeper into the gutter all the time. They used to be above this sort of thing, but now that their small, far right group is in charge, there is no limit to their desperation.
Obama should apologize for the lies he repeats. I shouted at the same words at my TV.
