Thrift shop moves to bigger, brighter location

The Salvation Army celebrated the grand opening of its new Family Store, in the former Hancock Fabric building in Danville Plaza Shopping Center, on Thursday. Capt. Allen Tanner said they had a strong turnout all day, and people were enjoying the bigger, brighter store that allows more items to be displayed.

The Salvation Army Thrift Shop has moved into larger quarters at the Danville Plaza Shopping Center.

While the move was only about a mile up the road, the difference in the location is tremendous, according to Sandra Gibson, a caseworker with the Salvation Army who was at the store’s grand opening on Thursday.

“It’s pretty, clean, has lots of windows and has a lot more room,” Gibson said.

New signs have not yet arrived, but when they do, they will not say “thrift shop.”

“All of the Salvation Army thrift stores are being changed to Family Stores,” Gibson said.

The store was full of people shopping Thursday afternoon, and Capt. G. Allen Tanner Jr. said he was pleased with the turnout.

“It was packed this morning, and its picking up again,” Tanner said. “It’s been a good day.”

Tanner’s wife, Capt. Tasha Tanner, said furniture had been moving briskly all day, and that she is happy they now have room to display it properly.

“We have more square footage, more parking, we’re able to put more out and display it better,” Tasha Tanner said. “This location will accommodate and serve the community better.”

The store’s hours will remain Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Donations can be dropped off at the store. Small donations can be brought in the front door, and larger donations can be driven around to the back of the store.

Pickups of donations, on Thursdays and Fridays only, can be arranged by calling (434) 793-0488.

I think that the new store is abolutely wonderful. As the article said it is bigger, brighter, and has a lot more parking. I think that this is a great move for the new “Family Store”. You all should check it out if you get time.

Many people don’t know what the Danville Plaza is.  It is the old Value City shopping center on Riverside Drive, at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Mount Cross Road, beside the River.  The same shopping center has the Harris Teeter grocery store.
