Budgeting for Baby
AFFORDING BABY
Breast feed:It's good for mom, baby and your pocketbook. Buy, rent or borrow a breast pump. Invest in a session with a lactation consultant if you have problems.
Shop consignment stores for clothes, but be careful about bringing home recalled clothing and items such as toys and cribs.
Borrow high-cost items such as strollers from friends, but don’t skimp on car seats.
Make your own baby food.
Take advantage of any free classes at the hospital where you plan to deliver.
If you are low risk for complications, consider a nurse-midwife or certified professional midwife.
Find out what your out-of-pocket expenses will be by calling your insurance company, the doctor and hospital. Check into payment plans. Check Virginia Health Information's obstetrics guide to see what some usual charges are.
If infertility is an issue, check into programs that offer grant assistance to families dealing with infertility. The Cade Foundation is one program.
