Warriors rain on BY homecoming

YANCEYVILLE — Quarterback Donald Britt rushed for two touchdowns and running back Billy Williamson added two more as Western Alamance routed Bartlett Yancey 40-13 Friday night in the Buccaneers’ homecoming game.
Western Alamance (8-1, 4-0 Triad Conference) rolled to a quick 14-0 lead by the 4:10 mark of the first quarter, highlighted by Williamson’s 68-yard dash to the end zone. He finished the game with 115 yards rushing and 14 yards receiving against BY (2-6, 1-2).
Britt also accounted for 163 yards passing on 16 attempts to complement his 34 yards rushing. The Warriors’ final 6-point score came when running back Scottie Thomas pounded his way across the Bucs’ goal line to end the third quarter.
Both teams were sloppy at times, combining for 17 penalties for 140 yards.
“Our guys are still gaining experience,” said BY coach Jason Phelps, “as you can see from all of those flags. But I feel good about our progress. Our conference losses are against two great teams in Dudley and Western Alamance. Even though we’re coming off our worst week of practice this season, I feel like we showed some promise at the end. We always play hard and I expect everyone to be ready for Morehead next week.”
The Bucs showed some spark in the fourth quarter, with running back Isarel Simpson bowling his way to a 15-yard score and quarterback Brandon Thompson completing a 7-yard laser to running back Raphael Stephens.
Warriors coach Hal Capps was also impressed with BY’s effort during the fourth quarter.
“The Bucs played a great final quarter,” he said. “As far as my team, I feel that we played very well at the beginning of the game, with our running game being the strong suit, but we just didn’t finish strongly. We need to focus better. I’m still looking for someone to give me a full four quarters of good football. Consistency is what we’re lacking as a team.”
Britt agreed with his coach.
“We need to work on finishing drives and not let up on a team that may not be playing as well as us,” he said. “I have to give my offensive line credit, though. They gave us time to finish inside of the red zone tonight, but to keep winning, we need to play up to our full potential at all times.”
