BY spoils Rockingham’s homecoming

WENTWORTH, N.C. — Rockingham County quarterback Cody Munson scored with 42.6 seconds left in the game, but the two-point conversion failed and allowed Bartlett Yancey to slip out of Wentworth with a 20-19 Triad 3-A Conference victory. The win marked the first conference victory for BY (2-5, 1-2) in nearly three years.
Brandon Thompson hit Kendall Cobb with a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes as the visitors grabbed an early 13-7 lead. In between, Rockingham answered with Munson’s first score — a 1-yard QB sneak.
The Buccaneers led 20-7 near the end of the third quarter, following a 23-yard touchdown run from running back Raphael Stephens. Cobbs’ extra point gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night.
However, Rockingham (1-6, 0-3) — which was playing its homecoming game — responded with a 10-play, 55-yard drive capped by Munson’s 4-yard touchdown plunge. Munson’s score, his second of the night, came with 11:33 left in the contest. Jason Davis’ extra point sailed to the left, however, leaving Rockingham County with a 7-point deficit.
BY had three more possessions over the final 11:33, but the visitors managed just one first down against a stingy Cougar defense.
The Bucs, who won despite four interceptions, completed 9-of-20 passes for 93 yards. Thompson was 8-of-18 for 86 yards and four INTs. He tossed a pair of touchdowns, both going to Cobb on 14- and 21-yard scoring strikes.
On the ground, BY rushed 30 times for 93 yards. The Bucs were led by Stephens, who rushed nine times for 54 yards, including his 23-yard TD run, and Thompson added eight carries for 30 yards.
Cobb led all BY receivers with four catches for 48 yards and two scores.
Defensively, BY got strong games from linebacker Bradley Taylor and defensive lineman Michael Brooks. Taylor finished the game with two sacks and Brooks added a sack and an interception, which led to Stephens’ 23-yard TD run late in the third quarter.
