Stoneville man dies in Eden wreck; DWI charges filed

A Stoneville man died in a wreck Saturday night in which a man was charged with driving while impaired.
The wreck happened at Washington and Prospect streets in Eden about 10:20 p.m. Responders found a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am in the Leaksville Christian Church parking lot. A 1992 Ford Ranger was on the shoulder of the road, Eden police said.
Investigators believe the Pontiac was traveling over the posted speed limit, heading west on Washington Street. The car then crossed the centerline, and the passenger side hit the truck.
The two men in the Pontiac were trapped inside. The passenger in the Pontiac, Eric Michael Matthews, 25, of 309 S. Glen St. in Stoneville, died at the scene, police said.
The car’s driver, Floyd Darnell Blackwell, 28, of 199 Saunders Road in Stoneville, and driver of the truck, David Jeffrey Hutcherson, 44, of 1010 Manning St. in Eden, were transported to Morehead Hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Blackwell was charged with driving while impaired, Capt. Reece Pyrtle said.
